Yunus May Step Down Amid Political Deadlock in Bangladesh

Dhaka : Bangladesh’s interim government head, Muhammad Yunus, is reportedly considering stepping down from his role due to growing political tensions and the failure of parties to reach a consensus on reforms, according to a report by BBC Bangla Service.

Nhid Islam, head of the student-led National Citizen Party, stated that Yunus is uncertain whether he can continue in his role, given the ongoing political impasse and rising pressure from opposition movements. “Sir said, ‘I was brought here after a mass uprising to bring change and reform. But in the current situation, with mounting pressure and no unity among political parties, I cannot continue like this,’” Islam told the BBC.

Islam, a key figure in the Students Against Discrimination movement that led last year’s mass protests and forced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, urged Yunus to stay on. “I told him to stay strong for the country’s future and fulfill the expectations of the people,” Islam said. “I hope everyone will support him.”

While Yunus has not released an official statement, the report has sparked speculation over friction between the military and the interim administration, particularly regarding the timeline for new parliamentary elections.

In recent days, Yunus’s government has been under increased strain. On May 12, it formally disbanded the Awami League, Hasina’s party, under a revised anti-terrorism law passed overnight. This came two days after banning the party’s activities under the earlier version of the same law.

Meanwhile, political parties continue to pressure Yunus to announce an election date, adding to the sense of urgency and instability within the interim government. Internal tensions within the Cabinet have also reportedly escalated.

As the situation unfolds, uncertainty looms over Bangladesh’s political future and whether Yunus can continue to lead the transition amid mounting challenges.
