Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin Reviews Waste Segregation and Recycling Initiative across Tamil Nadu Government Offices

Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Udhayanidhi Stalin, conducted a review meeting on (June 5, 2025) at the Ribbon Building of the Greater Chennai Corporation. During the meeting, he assessed, through a virtual platform, the progress made by district collectors in segregating and recycling various types of waste in government offices across Tamil Nadu under the “Clean Tamil Nadu Mission.”

As part of the first phase of this initiative spearheaded by Clean Tamil Nadu, government offices throughout the state—including those under the Chennai Corporation—carried out a massive cleaning drive today. This effort involved the segregation and collection of plastic waste, electronic waste, biodegradable waste, paper waste, glass waste, and unusable wooden materials, among others.

In a press interaction following the review meeting, the Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister shared:

“In a previous cabinet meeting, the Hon’ble Chief Minister directed us to make Tamil Nadu a cleaner state and to implement a solid waste management strategy. Based on his instructions, the Clean Tamil Nadu Mission Project was announced as a special initiative. For this project, the Hon’ble Chief Minister allocated ₹10 crore from the state budget.”

To mark World Environment Day, approximately 1,100 government offices across 38 districts participated in this mass cleanup effort, focusing on identifying and collecting different types of waste. This operation officially launched today and has been progressing successfully.

To coordinate and monitor the activities across the 38 districts, a Control Room has been established at the Ribbon Building of the Greater Chennai Corporation. As of now, around 300 metric tonnes of waste have been collected statewide.

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) have been issued to all district collectors to ensure proper handling and processing of the collected waste in compliance with environmental regulations.

The Deputy Chief Minister further stated that after observing how the project functions over the next two days, it will be extended to include village panchayat offices, government hospitals, colleges, and schools within the next 10 days, based on further instructions from the Hon’ble Chief Minister.

He also appealed to the public to actively participate in this mission, saying:

“Through this initiative, we aim to build a cleaner Tamil Nadu, and I encourage all citizens to join hands with the government to achieve this goal.”
