The Awareness He Created for Nature Will Remain Eternal.

A Heartfelt Tribute by Forest Minister Ganesh Naik on the Passing of Nature Sage Padma Shri Maruti Chitampalli

Mumbai : The news of the passing of Nature Sage, Padma Shri Maruti Chitampalli — a nature lover, writer, ornithologist, wildlife expert, and devout naturalist — is deeply saddening. Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, in a heartfelt tribute, said, “Chitampalli’s work awakened a deep consciousness in society towards nature. His vivid descriptions of the natural world, cultural insights, and deep sensitivity to ecological concerns have left a lasting imprint. His passing is akin to the loss of a living encyclopedia of nature.”

The 94-year-old legendary author was widely known for his profound knowledge of natural sciences, birdwatching, and wildlife conservation. Through his writings, Chitampalli instilled a love for nature among readers, offering meticulous observations and rich narratives on wildlife, birds, and biodiversity.

Some of his most celebrated works include Nawegaonbandhche Diwas, Nilawanti, Ranwata, Pakhar Maya, and Jangalachi Duniya — all of which contributed significantly to Marathi literature and environmental awareness.

In his condolence message, Minister Naik stated, “Generations have drawn inspiration from Padma Shri Chitampalli’s writings and contributions, which served to connect people with nature in a meaningful way.”

During his over three-decade-long service in the Forest Department, Chitampalli made significant contributions to the development of Karnala Bird Sanctuary, Nawegaon National Park, Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary, and Melghat Tiger Reserve. His work earned recognition at the global level in the fields of ornithology and wildlife conservation.

In April 2025, he was honoured with the Padma Shri Award by President Droupadi Murmu, a fitting tribute to his lifetime of service to nature and conservation.

Minister Naik also expressed his condolences to the bereaved family, and paid his respects, stating that Maruti Chitampalli’s legacy will live on through his words, his vision, and the green world he so dearly loved.
