Bumrah’s Fiery Five-for Hands India Narrow Lead in First Test Thriller

Jasprit Bumrah picks 5/83, including key dismissals of Harry Brook and Chris Woakes, as India bowl out England for 465 and secure a slender six-run lead at Headingley.

Leeds : Jasprit Bumrah once again proved why he is regarded as one of the finest fast bowlers in the world, claiming a brilliant 5/83 to help India dismiss England for 465 in 100.4 overs on Day 3 of the first Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test at Headingley. With this, India gained a slender lead of six runs, setting up an exciting second-innings battle.

England, riding on a fluent innings from Harry Brook, looked poised to take the lead. Playing on his home turf, Brook dazzled with his strokeplay and seemed destined for a memorable century. However, heartbreak struck as he fell for 99—just one run short of the milestone—pulling a short ball from Prasidh Krishna only to be caught at long leg. Despite four dropped chances off his bowling, Bumrah stood tall, collecting his third five-wicket haul in England and keeping India in the fight.

The post-lunch session saw Jamie Smith attack early, smashing a four and a six off Prasidh’s short deliveries. However, an attempted pull brought his downfall thanks to a brilliant piece of relay fielding by B Sai Sudharsan and Ravindra Jadeja, giving Prasidh a vital breakthrough.

Mohammed Siraj, meanwhile, struggled with his consistency, allowing Brook to cash in with a flurry of boundaries. Brook was granted a reprieve on 83 when Yashasvi Jaiswal spilled a catch in the gully, much to Bumrah’s frustration. Brook continued to flourish but was eventually dismissed just short of a hundred, his misjudged pull shot costing him dearly.

Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse then added quick runs as India’s bowlers leaked boundaries. Woakes reached the 2,000-run mark in Test cricket in style, hammering back-to-back sixes off Prasidh over mid-wicket and third man. Carse contributed two elegant boundaries off Siraj before being undone by a pinpoint yorker.

Bumrah, however, remained relentless. He ended Woakes’ resilient knock by sneaking a fuller ball through the gate, then claimed his fifth wicket with a perfect delivery that uprooted Josh Tongue’s off-stump. His five-for not only wrapped up the English innings but also ensured India walked away with a marginal lead—setting the stage for a thrilling finish to a closely contested Test.

Brief Scores:
India 471 in 113 overs (Shubman Gill 147; Ben Stokes 4-66)
England 465 in 100.4 overs (Ollie Pope 106, Harry Brook 99; Jasprit Bumrah 5-83, Prasidh Krishna 3-128)
India lead by 6 runs.
