The Future of Pahadi Korwa Tribes Brightens Under Pradhan Mantri Janman Yojana
Permanent Housing Brings Stability, Safety, and Livelihood Opportunities to Pahadi Korwa Families in Bhelwadad
Raipur : The lives of 16 Pahadi Korwa families from Bhelwadad, a remote forest hamlet under Bakoi Gram Panchayat in Udaipur block of Surguja district, are being transformed through the Pradhan Mantri Janman Yojana. These families, belonging to a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG), have now moved into permanent houses constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin), bringing a new sense of security and stability to their lives.

Previously, these families lived in fragile huts made of wood, leaves, and grass, facing the constant threat of venomous snakes and scorpions, especially during monsoons. Now, with the safety of concrete homes, they are protected from the elements and experience a new sense of dignity and comfort.
Located about 40 km from the Udaipur block headquarters and 80 km from Ambikapur district headquarters, the families have been relocated and settled together in a colony designed in accordance with their cultural traditions and natural surroundings, ensuring a community-friendly environment.
Each home is equipped with toilets, and basic amenities such as electricity, drinking water, and road access have also been provided. Beyond housing, these families have been integrated into various social welfare schemes including:
- Ayushman Bharat
- PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi
- Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana
- Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana
- Ration Cards, Aadhaar, Bank Accounts
- Mahila-centric Mahtari Vandana Yojana
- MNREGA Job Cards and more.
To ensure economic upliftment, three beneficiaries have been selected for palm oil plantation on three acres, and one beneficiary for fruit tree cultivation on one acre, paving the way for sustainable livelihoods.
Bhelwadad resident and community member Smt. Sukhni expressed her gratitude:
“Earlier, our village was excluded from all government schemes. But now, under Pradhan Mantri Janman Yojana, we have access to electricity, roads, water, and permanent homes. Our village is now connected to the mainstream of development.”
This transformation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary ‘Janman’ scheme has brought newfound hope and dignity to one of India’s most deprived tribal communities. The release of housing assistance funds triggered an outpouring of joy and celebration among the beneficiary families. Today, they are not only safe and secure, but also empowered to lead a life of dignity, inclusion, and opportunity.
