Tamil Nadu CM Stalin Approves Promotions of 21 Senior Police Officers Under Revised Career Progression Scheme
New police career advancement policy shortens eligibility period and boosts promotions across the force
Chennai : In a significant step towards police welfare and timely promotions, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru M.K. Stalin, today handed over promotion orders to 21 Senior Grade Police Officers, elevating them to the rank of Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP). The promotions were granted under a revised career advancement plan, part of the government’s assured career progression scheme.
At a ceremony held at the Secretariat, the Chief Minister personally issued the promotion orders to 10 senior officers from the Greater Chennai Police and 11 officers from other regional units, who were all promoted from the Senior Grade DSP level to ASP rank.
Previously, the career progression model followed a 10+5+10 years structure (10 years to DSP, 5 to ASP, 10 to Special Assistant SP). This has now been revised to a more progressive 10+3+10 format. Under this scheme:
- Officers are promoted from Second Grade DSP to Senior Grade DSP after 10 years,
- Then to Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) after 3 years,
- And finally to Special Assistant SP after another 10 years, totaling 23 years of service.
The government has allocated ₹28.19 crore for the implementation of this new structure, which has come into effect retrospectively from June 12, 2025.
According to official data, of the 8,533 police officers recruited in 2011, those who had served 3 years as Senior Grade DSPs as of June 12, 2025, will now be promoted as ASPs with effect from July 1, 2025.
In 2026, an additional 11,488 Senior Grade DSPs are expected to benefit from this promotion structure and will be elevated to ASP rank under the same policy.
This initiative fulfills the Chief Minister’s announcement during the 2025–26 police budget session, where he had promised to address delays in police promotions through structural changes in career progression, bringing parity and motivation across the department.
The event was also attended by:
- Thiru N. Muruganandam, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary (Home),
- Thiru Dheeraj Kumar, IAS, Additional Secretary for Prohibition and Excise,
- Thiru Shankar Jiwal, IPS, Director General of Police (Law & Order),
- Thiru G. Sengottaiyan, IPS, Director of Police (Administration).
This career upgradation model is part of the Chief Minister’s larger vision to ensure better morale, growth, and dignity in service for police personnel across Tamil Nadu.
