Construction of 3,620 Structures on Hill Slopes for Groundwater Recharge and Water Conservation
Massive Water Harvesting and Conservation Efforts Under ‘Mor Gaon Mor Pani’ Campaign
Raipur : Under the ‘Mor Gaon Mor Pani’ (My Village, My Water) campaign, large-scale efforts are being undertaken across Chhattisgarh to increase groundwater levels and promote water conservation. In Kanker district, the campaign is being implemented actively, with 3,620 water conservation structures constructed on hilly slopes so far.

In 2025 alone, 1,666 water conservation projects have been approved in Kanker. These include the construction of ponds, private farm ponds, soak pits, loose boulder check dams, gabion structures, earthen dams, check dams, contour trenches, defunct borewell recharge systems, and percolation tanks.
To permanently address water scarcity during the rainy season, the campaign is facilitating the construction of essential water retention structures in villages throughout the district. Under the MGNREGA scheme, many such structures are being built rapidly to conserve and enhance water resources.
These constructions aim to prevent rainwater from flowing away through streams and instead allow it to seep into the ground, thereby raising groundwater levels. Planning and execution of these initiatives are being supported by modern Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, which enables scientifically designed structures based on the “ridge-to-valley” approach. This ensures that rainwater is collected systematically and maximum water is harvested.
In addition to water conservation, these structures are also helping to prevent large-scale soil erosion caused by rainwater runoff. Slowing down stream flow and enabling gradual percolation into the soil will enrich underground aquifers. Overall, this initiative will ensure year-round water availability, help boost groundwater levels, and improve the livelihoods of local communities through sustainable resource management.
