Horticulture Crops Transform Rukmani’s Fortune

Empowered by National Agriculture Development Scheme, Farmer Doubles Income

Raipur : Rukmani Nag, a resident of Edka village in Narayanpur district, is a shining example of how determination, knowledge, and government support can transform the life of a farmer. “If you have the courage and the right information, a farmer can change their circumstances in any situation,” says Rukmani. “Earlier, I relied solely on paddy farming. Now, cultivating vegetables has doubled our income.”

Rukmani, along with her husband Dinanath Nag, used to sustain their family through traditional paddy cultivation. However, declining yields and increasing input costs began affecting their earnings. During this challenging phase, Rukmani came to know about the National Agriculture Development Scheme and various programs under the Horticulture Department.

Not only did she seek information, but she also acted on it. With departmental guidance and her hard work, she gave her farming practices a new direction. Today, she cultivates tomatoes, bitter gourd, and chili using advanced horticulture techniques, which has significantly boosted her income. Recently, she earned over ₹70,000 in a single season — a substantial leap that has brought economic stability to her family.

Her success story has begun to inspire other farmers in the village to move towards horticulture. This shift is not only enhancing farmers’ incomes but also generating local employment opportunities.

The efforts of the district administration and the Horticulture Department underscore the potential of government schemes. When such benefits reach the grassroots level, they can strengthen the rural economy and ensure a more secure future for farmers.
