Speaker Om Birla Directs Multi-Option Plan for Flood Solutions in Kota
Kota — Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday visited areas in Kota city affected by heavy rainfall and flooding. Beginning his tour in Ranpur, Birla assessed the situation with officials who reported that over 150 mm of rainfall in just a few hours had triggered flash floods and waterlogging in many drains beyond their capacity.
Birla emphasized the need for permanent solutions and directed officials to identify alternative drainage routes and prepare a new water diversion plan. He particularly discussed a special diversion project to channel excess water from Ranpur Talab and Alaniya areas towards the Chambal River.
“The capacity of existing drains must be increased, and a detailed survey should be conducted to present a proposal swiftly,” Birla stated. He instructed officials to develop a new diversion system to address recurrent flooding in residential colonies in the Devli Arab region.
Inspection of Borkhandi School
During his visit, Birla inspected the Borkhandi Government School following reports of falling plaster. He ordered immediate repairs by municipal authorities and instructed the Chief Block Education Officer to draft a proposal for constructing a new veranda and identify similar structurally weak school buildings across the district.
Condolences to Flood Victim Families
Birla also visited Nimoda Hariji village to meet the families of victims who drowned in the Chambal River due to heavy current. Expressing his condolences, he assured the families of government support and instructed the district collector to set up a committee to investigate the incident.

Following public complaints and Birla’s directive, the district administration has formed a four-member investigation committee led by ADM Sealing Krishna Shukla to probe the Nimoda Hariji incident. A review meeting on disaster management and relief efforts in the district will be held by Speaker Birla at 4 p.m. on Thursday in the Collectorate Auditorium.
