India Post Set for Full Digital Migration by August 4 : 1.65 Lakh Post Offices to Join IT 2.0 Network

New Delhi : In a major technological leap, more than 86,000 post offices across India have already transitioned to a new digital platform, and the entire network of nearly 1.65 lakh post offices will complete the migration by August 4, according to an official statement issued on Wednesday.

The initiative, part of the Centre’s reform strategy under the IT 2.0 framework, is designed to transform India Post into a modern, citizen-centric logistics and e-commerce powerhouse. The upgraded system will introduce advanced features such as real-time tracking, customised solutions for bulk customers, electronic proof of delivery, OTP-based authentication, digital payment options, and open API integrations, the statement said.

Centralised Delivery Model Introduced

Adopting global best practices, the Department of Posts has begun centralising delivery operations for all categories of mail and parcels. Dedicated delivery centres are being established to consolidate the service areas of multiple post offices, enabling more efficient operations.

“These centres will allow flexible delivery options, including Sunday and holiday deliveries and customised morning and evening slots,” the statement added. During the first phase, 344 delivery centres have been launched across the country.

Tapping into National Digital Commerce Ecosystems

A key element of the IT 2.0 transformation is the integration of India Post’s systems with major national digital platforms. Officials said the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) will enable wallet-based prepaid bookings, centralised order tracking, and automated reconciliation with ONDC’s accounting systems.

Additionally, India Post’s partnership with the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) will facilitate API-driven automated pricing and create centralised dashboards for payment tracking and cash-on-delivery (COD) settlements.

‘Scale, Speed and Service’ the New Motto

Union Minister of State for Communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani chaired a high-level review meeting on Tuesday, assessing mail operations, parcel services, and business strategy divisions.

“These enhancements must enable India Post to deliver end-to-end logistics services on par with leading market players,” Pemmasani said at the briefing.

“India Post’s unmatched physical footprint must now be complemented by cutting-edge digital capabilities. This transformation is about scale, speed, and service for every Indian — from the remotest village to the busiest metropolitan area,” he added.

Data-Driven Future for India Post

The Department is also leveraging data analytics to improve operational efficiency. A dedicated analytics team under IT 2.0 is working on route optimisation, smart sorting, and demand forecasting to enhance efficiency and reduce delivery times.

Officials emphasised that the ongoing changes are part of a strategic roadmap to position India Post as a strong competitor in the rapidly growing e-commerce parcel delivery sector.

By embracing digital transformation, India Post aims to unlock new revenue streams and establish itself as a modern logistics force aligned with India’s digital economy vision, the statement concluded.
