Inauguration and Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony by Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu

The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru M.K. Stalin, inaugurated several newly constructed buildings and laid the foundation stone for the proposed Central Prison Complex in Madurai on behalf of the Home Department, Fire and Rescue Services Department, Prisons and Correctional Services Department, and the Forensic Sciences Department. The total cost of the buildings inaugurated is ₹45.47 crore, and the upcoming Central Prison Project is estimated at ₹229.20 crore.

Details of Inaugurated Projects:

Home Department

On behalf of the Home Department, buildings constructed at a total cost of ₹27.59 crore were inaugurated. These include:

  • 25 police quarters,
  • 3 police stations,
  • 4 other police department buildings across districts including Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Chengalpattu, Kallakurichi, and Tiruchirapalli.

Since 2021, under various infrastructure development initiatives, the Home Department has constructed:

  • 3051 police quarters at a cost of ₹510.03 crore,
  • 51 police station buildings at ₹59.75 crore,
  • 18 other police buildings at ₹122.40 crore,
  • 253 houses for police personnel under the “Ungal Thontha Illam” scheme at ₹55.19 crore.

Fire and Rescue Services Department

Newly constructed buildings worth ₹13.54 crore include:

  • 2 staff quarters at Keerapakkam (₹74 lakh),
  • 3 Fire and Rescue Stations at Nenmeni, Kattumannarkoil, and Keerapakkam (₹12.80 crore).

From 2021 to date, infrastructure upgrades for this department include:

  • 249 staff quarters at ₹45.75 crore,
  • 34 Fire Stations at ₹64.79 crore,
  • 2 other departmental buildings at ₹2.45 crore.

Prisons and Correctional Services Department

Constructed buildings worth ₹60 lakh inaugurated include:

  • 2 staff quarters in the Palayamkottai Prison campus.

Since 2021, under infrastructure development:

  • 51 staff quarters have been built at ₹9.71 crore,
  • 17 departmental buildings at ₹28.58 crore.

Forensic Sciences Department

Under the 2023–24 Home Department budget, two new Narcotics Testing Units were established at the forensic labs in Coimbatore and Ramanathapuram at a cost of ₹3.74 crore. These units are equipped to assist law enforcement in forensic drug analysis.

Foundation Stone Laid for Madurai Central Prison Project:

The Hon’ble Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for the Madurai Central Prison Complex, to be relocated from the congested city center to the Semboor region on the outskirts. The project involves:

  • Construction cost of ₹229.20 crore,
  • 113 staff quarters,
  • Concrete barracks, and
  • Perimeter security walls.
