UN Chief Urges Restraint as US-Iran Tensions Escalate Amid Reports of Strikes in Gulf Region

United Nations, June 2026 : United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over the latest escalation in hostilities between the United States and Iran, calling on all sides to exercise maximum restraint and avoid actions that could derail ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict.

Speaking at the UN headquarters on Wednesday, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the Secretary-General was alarmed by reports of overnight exchanges of fire involving the United States and Iran, as well as reports that Iran had targeted locations in Kuwait and Bahrain.

“The Secretary-General is deeply troubled by reports of civilian casualties,” Dujarric said during the daily press briefing. He emphasized that all parties must avoid further escalation and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of every nation in the region.

Guterres also condemned attacks on civilian infrastructure and reiterated that international humanitarian law strictly prohibits the targeting of civilian facilities and non-combatants. He urged all involved parties to comply with their international obligations and take every possible measure to safeguard civilian lives.

The UN chief further reaffirmed his support for ongoing diplomatic initiatives seeking to end the conflict. He specifically acknowledged mediation efforts led by Pakistan and encouraged all stakeholders to engage constructively and in good faith to achieve a peaceful resolution.

The appeal from the United Nations came amid a fresh exchange of accusations between Tehran and Washington. Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed on Wednesday that its naval forces had targeted a US destroyer in the Gulf of Oman after detecting what it described as aggressive activities near Iranian territorial waters.

According to a statement released by the IRGC’s official media outlet, Iranian naval forces tracked the movements of the US vessel and launched a strike against what they identified as its command centre. The statement accused the United States of violating regulations governing navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and engaging in hostile actions against Iranian commercial shipping.

The IRGC warned that Iranian forces remain on high alert and would respond immediately to any perceived threats from the United States or Israel.

However, the claim was swiftly rejected by the US military. The United States Central Command stated that all American naval assets in the region continue to operate safely and without disruption, denying that any US destroyer had been struck.

In a separate development, the IRGC also denied responsibility for damage caused at Kuwait International Airport. Iranian officials dismissed allegations that missiles or drones launched by Tehran had struck a passenger terminal, instead claiming that the incident resulted from a malfunction involving a US Patriot missile defence system.

Earlier in the day, Kuwaiti authorities reported that ballistic missiles and drones had hit several civilian and strategic facilities across the country, including the airport. Officials said one person was killed and dozens more were injured in the attacks, which they attributed to Iran.

At the same time, Iranian authorities confirmed that missile and drone operations had been carried out against US military bases located in Kuwait and Bahrain, further heightening regional tensions.

The confrontation is unfolding against the backdrop of growing tensions in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Since late February, Iran has imposed restrictions on vessels linked to the United States and Israel, while Washington has maintained a naval blockade aimed at limiting maritime access to Iranian ports.

Despite the military escalation, diplomatic contacts have reportedly continued behind the scenes. Over recent weeks, Iran and the United States have exchanged multiple proposals through Pakistani mediation channels and are said to be working toward a framework agreement that could pave the way for a broader peace settlement and an end to the conflict.

With tensions remaining high and regional security increasingly fragile, the United Nations has renewed its call for dialogue, warning that any further escalation could have serious consequences for stability across the Middle East and beyond.
