MoU Signed Between Clean Tamil Nadu and IIT Madras for Integrated Solid Waste Management Framework in Presence of CM M.K. Stalin
Chennai, Aug 25: In a significant move towards revolutionizing solid waste management in Tamil Nadu, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today between Clean Tamil Nadu Company Limited (CTCL) and the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M). The agreement was signed in the presence of Hon’ble Chief Minister Thiru. M.K. Stalin at the State Secretariat.
Under the Special Project Implementation Unit, this collaboration aims to establish an integrated and scientific framework for managing solid waste generated daily across Tamil Nadu’s urban and rural areas. The MoU emphasizes the adoption of cutting-edge technologies for effective waste collection, processing, recycling, and conversion into value-added resources in compliance with environmental regulations.
Clean Tamil Nadu Company Limited, a special purpose vehicle initiated by the Government of Tamil Nadu under the “Thooimai Tamil Nadu” (Clean Tamil Nadu) campaign, will spearhead the project. The company will work through local bodies to ensure robust waste management solutions are implemented statewide.
As a key step in this direction, CTCL and IIT Madras will jointly develop advanced technological solutions and build a centralized system for scientific waste management, ensuring efficient segregation, recycling, and resource recovery. The partnership will also focus on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by addressing the emerging challenges in waste management through innovative practices.
The MoU was signed by Dr. S. Udhayakumar, IAS, Managing Director of CTCL, and Professor Mahesh Kapilavai, Director of IIT Madras, in the presence of Chief Minister Thiru. M.K. Stalin.
The event was also attended by Hon’ble Minister Thiru. Udhayanidhi Stalin, Chief Secretary Thiru. N. Muruganandam, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary for Special Projects Implementation Thiru. Pradeep Yadav, IAS, and senior government officials.
This agreement marks a decisive step towards building a cleaner, greener Tamil Nadu by leveraging scientific innovation and ensuring sustainable waste management practices.
