Successful Combined Coronary Bypass Surgery and Triple Heart Valve Operation at Ambedkar Hospital

Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Medical College
Patient had 95% Coronary Artery Blockage along with Damage to All Three Heart Valves
Aortic Valve Repair – A Rare and Technically Complex Procedure

Raipur, Aug 2025 : The Department of Heart, Chest, and Vascular Surgery at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Hospital, under Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Medical College, successfully performed a complex heart surgery on a 58-year-old woman. The procedure involved an off-pump beating heart coronary bypass surgery, repair of two heart valves, and replacement of the mitral valve—all conducted in a single operation. The patient, a resident of Jewra Sirsa village in Durg district, had been suffering from breathlessness and chest pain for the past three years.

Diagnosis Revealed Severe Blockage

Medical investigations revealed that the patient had a 95% blockage in her coronary artery, and all three major heart valves—Mitral, Aortic, and Tricuspid—were damaged. Following echocardiography and coronary angiography, the doctors decided to proceed with surgery. The procedure commenced with an off-pump beating heart bypass surgery, which was performed without stopping the heart. Thereafter, using a heart-lung machine, the heart and lungs were temporarily arrested. During the operation, the chambers of the heart were opened, the mitral valve was replaced with a metallic prosthetic valve, the aortic valve was repaired using a special technique, and the tricuspid valve was corrected with a ring annuloplasty.

Key Highlights of the Surgery

This was a high-risk surgery due to the patient’s low ejection fraction (EF) and the multiple simultaneous procedures involved. An arterial graft was used in the bypass, which is more durable than venous grafts. Aortic valve repairs of this kind are possible only in select medical institutions due to their technical complexity. The patient’s condition is currently stable post-surgery, and she is expected to be discharged and return home soon.

Dean of the Medical College, Dr. Vivek Chaudhary, and Hospital Superintendent, Dr. Santosh Sonkar, congratulated Dr. Krishnakant Sahu and his team for this surgical achievement. It is noteworthy that the Department of Heart, Chest, and Vascular Surgery at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Hospital is renowned for its consistent excellence, innovation, and dedicated patient care.
