JMM Founder Shibu Soren’s Last Rites on Today in Nemra ; Nation Mourns Loss of Iconic Tribal Leader

New Delhi, Aug 2025: The final rites of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren will be held on Tuesday ( Today ) at 2 p.m. in his native village, Nemra, near Barka Nala in Bokaro district. The 81-year-old tribal leader, fondly known as “Dishom Guru,” passed away on Monday morning at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, following prolonged kidney-related illness.

Soren had been undergoing treatment for over a month under the supervision of Dr. A.K. Bhalla, Chairman of Nephrology, along with a specialized team from the hospital’s neurology and ICU departments. He was officially declared dead at 8:56 a.m. on August 4.

A towering figure in Jharkhand’s political landscape, Soren’s passing has triggered an outpouring of grief nationwide. Top leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi, are expected to attend his funeral in Nemra. Thousands of supporters, political workers, and members of tribal communities are also anticipated to gather for the final farewell to the veteran leader who championed the cause of tribal rights and statehood.

Shibu Soren’s younger son, Basant Soren, will perform the last rites and light the funeral pyre.

The Jharkhand government has declared a three-day state mourning from August 4 to August 6. During this period, all official programs are suspended. National flags will fly at half-mast across state buildings, and no government-sponsored entertainment events will take place as a mark of respect.

Condolences have poured in from across party lines, with leaders acknowledging Soren’s pivotal role in the creation of Jharkhand and his lifelong commitment to tribal welfare. President Droupadi Murmu paid her respects at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and offered condolences to Soren’s family, including his son and current Chief Minister, Hemant Soren.

Shibu Soren’s demise marks the end of a significant chapter in Jharkhand’s history. As a three-time Chief Minister and long-serving Member of Parliament, his legacy as a tribal leader and architect of Jharkhand’s statehood movement will remain etched in India’s political narrative.
