Bengaluru Needs Delhi-Like Financial Support to Become a Global City: DK Shivakumar to PM Modi
Bengaluru, Aug 2025 – Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to extend financial support to Bengaluru on par with Delhi, arguing that the city’s rapid urbanisation demands massive infrastructure investment to maintain its position as India’s leading technology hub.
In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, Shivakumar welcomed Modi to “the country’s leading technology and innovation hub,” noting that Bengaluru significantly contributes to the national GDP, hosts the country’s largest IT/ITES base, attracts major global investments, and nurtures cutting-edge research institutions and skilled talent.
However, he warned that “rapid urbanisation has created serious challenges” in mobility, water supply, waste management, drainage, housing, and overall infrastructure. According to him, the city requires an estimated investment of ₹1.5 lakh crore to address these gaps.
The proposed projects include urban tunnels, a Bengaluru Business Corridor, integrated solid waste management plants, elevated roads along metro lines, flyovers, additional drinking water projects, new roads over rainwater drains, and a Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).
Shivakumar emphasised that Karnataka is the second-highest tax-paying state in the country, contributing about ₹4.50 lakh crore annually to the national exchequer. “I request the Government of India to provide financial support to Bengaluru at par with Delhi, so that the city can emerge as a truly global metropolis,” he wrote.
He added that the Prime Minister’s “continued guidance and support will be invaluable in realising the vision of a world-class Bengaluru with sustainable infrastructure and inclusive growth.”
Earlier in the day, Shivakumar accused the central government of neglecting Bengaluru’s development. Speaking to reporters, he said, “We have not been given enough funds. Bengaluru has been neglected. I would like to tell PM Modi that you have to take care of the city as a national capital. BJP MPs and MLAs are only garnering votes in the name of PM Modi or the party.”
The Deputy Chief Minister said he would personally convey to the Prime Minister what Bengaluru needs and seek assurances for funding key projects. “I will tell them what is needed for Bengaluru and what should be given,” he asserted.
Shivakumar’s push comes as Bengaluru grapples with worsening traffic congestion, flooding during heavy rains, and growing demands on civic amenities, even as it continues to fuel India’s economic growth.
