India has extended PIO Cards till 31st. December, 2025.

The Government of India has extended the validity of Person of Indian Origin (PIO) cards until 31st. December 2025. This means that PIO card holders can continue to use their cards, along with a valid foreign passport, to enter and exit India until the end of the year.

Despite the current extension, PIO card holders are strongly advised to convert their PIO cards to OCI cards by the 31st. December 2025.

An OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card is a multiple-entry, lifelong visa that allows an individual of Indian origin to live and work in India indefinitely. It provides numerous benefits and privileges, essentially granting parity with Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in many areas.

Key Features and Benefits:

Multiple Entry, Lifelong Visa: OCI cardholders can enter and exit India as many times as needed for the rest of their lives.

Exemption from Police Registration: OCI cardholders are exempt from reporting to the police for any length of stay in India.

Parity with NRIs: OCI cardholders generally enjoy the same benefits as NRIs in economic, financial, and educational fields. This includes parity in inter-country adoption of Indian children, domestic airfares, and entry fees for national parks and museums.

Specific Benefits:

The Ministry of External Affairs has issued notifications granting OCI cardholder’s further benefits, such as the ability to practice certain professions (doctors, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, advocates, architects, and chartered accountants) in India.

Not Entitled to: OCI cardholders are not entitled to vote, hold constitutional posts (like President, Vice President, or Supreme Court Judge), or employment in the government, among other restrictions.

Important Considerations:

Not a Citizenship: An OCI card is not equivalent to Indian citizenship.

Restrictions: OCI cardholders are not allowed to acquire agricultural land or plantation properties in India.

Specific Permissions: Certain activities like missionary work, mountaineering, and journalism may require prior permission from the Indian government.

Protected/Restricted Areas: OCI cardholders may require Protected Area Permit (PAP) or Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to visit certain restricted areas.

Cancellation of registration as OCI –

The Central Government may, by order, cancel the registration granted under sub-section (1) of section 7A if it is satisfied that:

  • The registration as an overseas citizen of India was obtained by means of fraud, false representation or the concealment of any material fact.
  • The overseas citizen of India has shown disaffection towards the Constitution of India as by law established.
  • The overseas citizen of India has, during any war in which India may be engaged, unlawfully traded or communicated with an enemy or been engaged in, or associated with, any business or commercial activity that was to his knowledge carried on in such manner as to assist an enemy in that war.
  • The overseas citizen of India has, within five years after registration under sub-section (1) of section 7A has been sentenced to imprisonment for a term of not less than two years.
  • It is necessary so to do in the interest of the sovereignty and integrity of India, the security of India, friendly relations of India with any foreign country, or in the interests of the general public.
