Iran Reaffirms Strategic Support for Hezbollah Amid Rising Regional Tensions

Tehran, July 2026 : Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Sayyid Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei has reaffirmed Tehran’s unwavering support for Lebanon’s Hezbollah, describing the backing of the group as a “strategic mandate” of the Islamic Republic. The remarks came in a letter addressed to Hezbollah Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem, according to Iranian state media.

In his response to a message from Qassem reaffirming the group’s allegiance, Khamenei praised Hezbollah for its resilience during the ongoing conflict with Israel. He described the organisation as standing “like an unyielding rock” in the face of what he called Israeli aggression and commended its role in resisting military pressure.

According to Iran’s official Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Khamenei stated that, in line with the policies established by the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran considers supporting what he described as “oppressed yet powerful resistance fighters” to be a strategic responsibility. He also characterised Hezbollah’s message as one worthy of “praise and honour.”

The latest exchange underscores Iran’s continued political and ideological support for Hezbollah at a time of heightened instability across the Middle East, where tensions involving Israel, Iran and allied regional groups remain elevated.

Separately, Khamenei recently criticised the United States over what Tehran alleges were repeated violations of the peace Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Iran and the US on June 18. In a message carried by Iranian media, he argued that Washington’s actions had demonstrated that commitments made by US President Donald Trump could not be trusted.

According to Khamenei, repeated violations of the agreement had exposed what he described as America’s “true face” and reinforced Iran’s long-standing view that the United States was an unreliable negotiating partner. He further accused Washington of failing to honour its commitments and said recent developments served as further evidence of what he termed broken promises.

The Iranian leader also warned that if the United States continued pursuing what he described as aggressive policies against Iran, it would face a strong response from Tehran and its regional allies. He cautioned that any further escalation would result in consequences that would leave “unforgettable lessons” for those involved.

The remarks come despite ongoing diplomatic efforts under the MoU framework, which envisaged negotiations between Tehran and Washington within 60 days to work toward a broader and more comprehensive agreement.

With regional tensions remaining high and diplomatic engagement continuing alongside military confrontations, Iran’s latest statements are likely to add further complexity to an already fragile geopolitical environment in the Middle East.
