Seventy Years of Sports in Madhya Pradesh: From Tradition to Modernity

Bhopal, Aug 2025 : Since independence, Madhya Pradesh has undertaken a long and inspiring journey in the field of sports. In the early decades, sports was confined to a limited circle, but gradually the state became a nursery of sporting talent. Through hard work and passion, athletes brought glory to the state and the nation. Cities like Indore, Bhopal, and Gwalior gradually emerged as centers of sports excellence, and today Madhya Pradesh has established itself firmly on the sports map of India. Indore, Bhopal, Gwalior, and Ujjain gave recognition to sports like cricket, hockey and Mallakhamb. From rural playgrounds to urban stadiums, sports infused energy and self-confidence among the youth.

The period from 1950 to 1980 was dominated by cricket and traditional games. The Holkar cricket team’s consecutive Ranji Trophy victories brought national prestige to Madhya Pradesh, while Gwalior and Ujjain gave Mallakhamb a unique identity. Between 1980 and 2000, sports like karate and badminton expanded, and Madhya Pradesh made its first serious strides towards Olympic-level competitive sports. The 21st century transformed the sporting landscape completely.

Hockey Nursery

Whenever hockey is mentioned, Bhopal finds a special place. For decades, Bhopal has been known as the “Nursery of Hockey.” Many national and international players emerged from here. Since the 1950s and 60s, hockey culture has been strong in Bhopal, and this is why several renowned Olympians have hailed from the city. Ashok Kumar (son of the wizard of hockey, Dhyan Chand) and Zafar Iqbal carried Madhya Pradesh’s name to the international stage. Aslam Sher Khan, gold medalist at the 1975 World Cup and member of the 1976 Olympic team; Inam-ur-Rahman, bronze medalist at the 1968 Mexico Olympics; and forward player Sameer Dad from the 2000 Sydney Olympics are living testimony to this tradition. The iconic Aishbagh Stadium and the vibrant local club culture have kept this nursery alive for generations. Several hockey turfs and training centers in Bhopal continue to nurture this sport.

The state’s academy system institutionalized this legacy. The Women’s Hockey Academy in Gwalior was established in 2006, from which stalwarts like Sushila Chanu, Monika, and Reena Khokhar went on to represent the Indian women’s hockey team. The Men’s Hockey Academy was inaugurated in Bhopal in January 2007. From this academy, Itarsi’s young talent Vivek Sagar debuted in the Indian team at the age of just 17, becoming one of the youngest players to do so. Vivek Sagar played a crucial role in helping India secure bronze medals at both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympics. For this reason, Bhopal’s name is held in high regard in the history of Indian hockey.

Development of Sports Infrastructure

The state government has given sports a new dimension by developing infrastructure. Today, Bhopal and Indore are known for sports academies, hockey turfs, and athletic tracks. In the year 2013, Mallakhamb was declared the state sport—an act of honoring tradition while bringing it to modern platforms. Similarly, initiatives like the “Vikram Award” were instituted to not only honor players but also provide them with government jobs and financial incentives to secure their future.

The Madhya Pradesh State Shooting Academy of Excellence in Bhopal deserves special mention. Established in January 2007, the academy houses world-class facilities, including 10m, 25m, and 50m rifle/pistol ranges, as well as a dedicated trap and skeet shotgun range. The final shooting hall is equipped with state-of-the-art amenities and proper seating for spectators. Built to international standards, this academy has become the cornerstone of the continued success of shooters from Madhya Pradesh.

Water Sports

Bhopal has carved out a distinct identity in water sports as well. A Water Sports Academy of Excellence was established at the Upper Lake, offering advanced facilities in kayaking, canoeing, rowing, and sailing. Likewise, the ecosystem of the Lower Lake has emerged as a leading national center for para-kayaking/canoeing, producing athletes like Prachi Yadav, who made history at the Asian Para Games.

In recent years, Madhya Pradesh has made its strong presence felt at both national and international arenas. In the Khelo India Youth Games 2025, the state finished among the top five states. Shooter Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar brought glory by winning gold at the Asian Championships. Today, Madhya Pradesh has 18 academies of excellence, 22 hockey turfs, and over 15 athletic tracks. Updated sports performance indicators reaffirm this progress. At the Khelo India Youth Games 2025 (Bihar), Madhya Pradesh secured 32 medals and placed among the top ten states.

Sports Science Center

In today’s age of modern technology, sports science plays a crucial role. Madhya Pradesh has taken a lead by setting up a Sports Science Center and a state-of-the-art High Performance Training Academy. Here, athletes receive services such as physiotherapy, biomechanics, sports nutrition, and psychological counseling. Advanced gyms, recovery pools, anti-gravity running machines, and video analytics labs are preparing players for international-level competitions.

The impact of these scientific facilities is now clearly visible. Athletes are not only improving their skill sets but also delivering stronger performances with the support of scientific training and mental resilience. Recent successes in throwball, athletics, and para-sports are results of this modern approach. In the coming years, sports science-based academies will not only strengthen Madhya Pradesh but also serve as centers of talent development for the entire nation. Achievements like gold medal in the Asian Championship by a state shooter, Madhya Pradesh’s position among the top five states in the Khelo India Youth Games, and para-athlete Prachi Yadav’s historic feats are direct outcomes of modern strategy and infrastructure.

It is noteworthy that the state government has bid to host the 2028 National Games. Work is underway on a multi-sport international complex and an International Sports Science Center at Nathu Barkheda in Bhopal. Announcements regarding water-tourism initiatives, the Asian Rowing Championship, and a proposed Sports University reflect the state’s long-term sports strategy.

Special Honors by the Government of Madhya Pradesh

The Government of Madhya Pradesh has always honored athletes who win medals at the international level. It is the state’s policy to not only provide them with cash rewards but also prestigious appointments in government service. In this regard, Olympic bronze medalist hockey player Vivek Sagar Prasad was honored with a cash reward of ₹1 crore and appointment as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in the state police service. Additionally, Vikram Award recipients have also been provided with the provision of government jobs.

In sum, the seventy-year-long journey of sports in Madhya Pradesh stands as testimony that the state has not confined sports to mere competition, but has embraced them as a fusion of culture, tradition, and modern science. Today, Madhya Pradesh has not only established a firm place on India’s sports map but is also carving out a strong identity in the global sporting arena.
