CM Pramod Sawant Urges Parents to Reconsider Government Schools in Goa

Panaji, Sep 2025 : At the state Teachers’ Day function, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant raised concern over the growing preference for private unaided schools in Goa. He noted that while the state has 773 government schools, many parents are choosing the 141 private unaided schools, which now enroll more students.

Citing a recent report, Sawant said the English medium of instruction remains the key factor drawing parents to private institutions. However, he argued that government and aided schools are better equipped, with stronger infrastructure and well-trained teachers. “We have English teachers in every government school. Our teachers undergo regular training and skill upgrades. Experts also emphasize that the mother tongue is the best medium for early learning,” he said, urging parents to have greater faith in government schools.

The chief minister further pointed out that private unaided schools are not bound by salary or qualification norms, which can lead to hiring untrained staff. In contrast, government and aided schools ensure compulsory training for their teachers.

In a first, the government introduced the ‘Mhaji Lab, Bari Lab’ awards, carrying prizes of Rs 2–3 lakh each, to schools with the best laboratories, with the aim of further improving facilities.

Sawant also assured transparency in the State Best Teacher Awards. He emphasized that in his six years as chief minister, he had never recommended any candidate. “The committee selects winners purely on merit. Those honoured have done so through selfless dedication, not in pursuit of awards,” he remarked.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Sawant said efforts will continue to strengthen public education across Goa, ensuring that government schools remain centers of quality learning.
