Adequate Water for Irrigation Through Check Dam
MGNREGA-built check dam resolves water crisis, makes farming easier
Raipur, Sept 2025 – A check dam constructed under MGNREGA has not only provided farmers with adequate water for irrigation but has also increased the water levels of local sources. Built at a cost of ₹5.27 lakh in Korbi Gram Panchayat, Bilha development block, Bilaspur district, the check dam has transformed lives. It is proving crucial in quenching the village’s thirst and bringing greenery back to the fields. With access to irrigation water, farmers here are now able to harvest two to three crops annually.
Since the construction of the check dam, there has been significant improvement in water conservation and irrigation in the area. Water is now available for longer periods even after the monsoon ends. Fields are receiving sufficient irrigation, groundwater levels have risen, and villagers have been relieved from drinking water shortages. Timely irrigation has also boosted crop yields. The Korbi Gram Panchayat check dam has become a successful example of water storage and conservation.
Residents of Korbi explain that earlier, water from the local stream would flow away without stopping, leaving the fields dry and uncultivated. Without any water conservation system, rainwater could not be properly utilized, and farming always faced a shortage of water. The check dam built under MGNREGA has now freed villagers from many such problems.
