Rehabilitation of Residents from Two Affected Buildings near Elphinstone Bridge to MHADA Flats in the Same Area
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde Approves Proposal; Relief for 83 Project-Affected Residents
Mumbai, Sept 2025 : Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has approved a proposal to rehabilitate residents of two affected buildings near the Elphinstone Bridge, part of the Shivdi–Worli Elevated Corridor project, into available MHADA flats in the same locality.
Residents of the two affected buildings—Lakshmi Nivas and Haji Noorani Chawl—comprising 83 project-affected families, will now be relocated within the same area. This approval by Deputy CM Shinde brings much-needed relief to the residents.
As part of the construction of the Worli–Shivdi Connector, the Elphinstone Bridge is to be demolished. The construction of pillars for the project would impact the two buildings—Lakshmi Nivas and Haji Noorani Chawl. Residents had been demanding relocation within the same area using available MHADA flats. Responding to this, Deputy CM Shinde approved the proposal for their rehabilitation in nearby MHADA accommodations. Of the total, 60 families from Lakshmi Nivas and 23 families from Haji Noorani Chawl will be rehabilitated locally.
Earlier, 19 buildings were projected to be affected by the project. However, MMRDA carried out structural changes and modified the alignment, ensuring 17 of those buildings would no longer be impacted. This not only simplified the rehabilitation process but also saved approximately ₹5,200 crore in resettlement costs. Additionally, this decision will accelerate project execution and help ensure timely completion.
Rehabilitation Criteria:
- Homeowners with less than 300 sq. ft. area will be allotted a flat of 300 sq. ft. + 35% additional area = 405 sq. ft. total.
- Homeowners with 300 to 1,292 sq. ft. area will be allotted a new flat equivalent to their existing area plus 35% additional area.
