Former Meghalaya CM D.D. Lapang Passes Away at 91
Shillong, Sept 2025 : Former Meghalaya Chief Minister D.D. Lapang, one of the state’s longest-serving political leaders, passed away on Friday night at a hospital in Shillong. He was 91.
Born on April 10, 1934, Lapang’s journey to the state’s highest office was nothing short of remarkable. Rising from modest beginnings, he went on to serve as Meghalaya’s chief minister on four occasions between 1992 and 2008.

Lapang’s political career began in 1972 when he was elected as an independent candidate from Nongpoh to the first-ever Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. Over the decades, he held multiple ministerial portfolios before assuming the role of chief minister.
Known for his political acumen and approachable personality, Lapang commanded respect across party lines. He was admired for his simplicity, humility, and ability to navigate Meghalaya’s coalition-driven politics. His tenure as chief minister focused on strengthening governance in the young hill state, expanding developmental initiatives, and fostering communal harmony. Colleagues often remembered his gift for consensus-building during politically turbulent times.
Before entering politics, Lapang worked as a road labourer and later as a school sub-inspector, experiences that shaped his deep connection with the struggles of ordinary citizens. Even after retiring from active politics, he continued to be regarded as an elder statesman, offering guidance and wisdom to the political fraternity.
In 2024, a life-size statue was unveiled in Ri-Bhoi district in recognition of his decades of service. His passing has prompted widespread tributes, with leaders describing him as “a leader who never forgot his roots” and “a statesman whose journey embodied perseverance, humility, and service.”
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and senior leaders from across the Northeast are expected to visit his residence to pay their respects. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family soon.
Lapang leaves behind a legacy of resilience and commitment, remembered as a leader who rose from humble origins to help shape Meghalaya’s political landscape for more than three decades.
