Gas Cooking Cylinder Tampering Penalised

Aizawl, May 2026: The Legal Metrology Department on Thursday took action against a person involved in tampering with domestic LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinders and penalised him under the law.

According to officials, Zothan Gas Agency had reported suspicion of underweight cylinders in its gas distribution. Following the complaint, officials from the Legal Metrology Department inspected LPG domestic cylinders and found irregularities in weighing. Out of 306 cylinders checked, 259 cylinders were found to be underfilled or not meeting the prescribed weight standards.

During the investigation, truck driver Tera Moni (48), a resident of Ram Nagar, Silchar, was identified as the suspected person involved in the malpractice. He was penalised under Section 30 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 for violation of legal standards related to measurement and weight accuracy.

Authorities stated that the matter is being treated seriously as it directly affects consumer safety and fairness in distribution of essential commodities like LPG.

The department further directed that the affected gas cylinders must be properly refilled and corrected by the concerned agency in coordination with the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and the gas agency. Necessary corrective measures are being taken to ensure compliance with safety and weight regulations before further distribution.

Officials added that strict monitoring will continue to prevent such irregularities in the future and to protect consumer interests in the supply of essential fuels.
