Shehbaz Sharif Meets Saudi Crown Prince to Deepen Strategic and Economic Ties

ISLAMABAD, Sept 2025 : Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to meet Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Wednesday during a day-long state visit to the Kingdom, aimed at formalizing cooperation across multiple sectors and discussing pressing regional and global developments, Pakistan’s Foreign Office confirmed.

Sharif’s visit comes at a critical juncture, with the Middle East witnessing heightened volatility. Israel has recently intensified its military campaign, extending strikes to several regional states, including a 12-day conflict with Iran and an airstrike on Qatar earlier this month. The strike on Doha coincided with Qatar’s efforts to mediate ceasefire and hostage negotiations between Israel and Hamas.

The Pakistani premier last met the Saudi crown prince earlier this week on the sidelines of the emergency Arab-Islamic summit in Doha. The summit was convened in solidarity with Qatar following Israel’s escalation.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

According to the Foreign Office, Sharif is visiting the Kingdom “at the invitation of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.” He is accompanied by senior members of his Cabinet.

“The two leaders are expected to exchange views on regional and global developments of mutual interest,” the statement said. “The visit is expected to result in the formalization of cooperation in diverse fields, reflecting the shared commitment of both sides to further enhance and deepen their longstanding fraternal ties.”

Sharif has made frequent trips to Saudi Arabia since assuming office, including two earlier this year, underscoring Islamabad’s efforts to strengthen trade, investment, and economic linkages with Riyadh. In October last year, both countries signed 34 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and agreements worth $2.8 billion, focused on expanding private-sector cooperation and commercial partnerships.

This latest engagement is expected to review the full spectrum of Pakistan-Saudi relations. The Foreign Office highlighted that ties between the two nations are rooted in “shared faith, values, and mutual trust.”

Strategic and Economic Significance

Saudi Arabia has long been regarded as one of Pakistan’s closest strategic partners and economic allies. Over the years, Riyadh has extended significant financial support to Islamabad, particularly during Pakistan’s recurring economic crises. This includes direct external financing and assistance in securing crucial International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan programs.

The Kingdom is also Pakistan’s largest source of foreign remittances, with more than 2.5 million Pakistani expatriates living and working in Saudi Arabia. These remittances serve as a vital lifeline for Pakistan’s $350 billion economy, helping to stabilize external accounts and sustain foreign exchange reserves amid mounting fiscal pressures.

Looking Ahead

The Foreign Office emphasized that Sharif’s visit offers “an important opportunity to consolidate this unique partnership, while exploring new avenues of collaboration for the benefit of the peoples of the two countries.”

Analysts note that Pakistan’s close alignment with Saudi Arabia not only provides economic relief but also enhances Islamabad’s diplomatic standing in the Muslim world. At the same time, Riyadh values Pakistan’s support on regional issues and views its military and diplomatic backing as a strategic asset.

As the region grapples with escalating conflicts and shifting alliances, the Sharif–Salman meeting is expected to reaffirm the resilience of Pakistan-Saudi relations, while charting new paths for cooperation in trade, investment, and security.
