India Edge Out Sri Lanka in Thrilling Super Over to Seal Super Four Spot in Asia Cup 2025

Sept 2025 : Dubai witnessed high drama as India and Sri Lanka played out a high-scoring thriller in the Asia Cup 2025, with the match going down to a Super Over before India emerged victorious at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

India Set the Pace with 202

Batting first, India posted the highest total of the tournament so far — 202 for 5 in 20 overs. The innings was powered by young opener Abhishek Sharma, who smashed a blistering 61 off 31 balls, laced with 8 fours and 2 sixes. His aggressive stroke play gave India a strong platform.

Sanju Samson (39 off 25) kept the momentum going in the middle overs, while Tilak Varma (49 not out off 34) anchored the finish, ensuring India crossed the 200-run mark. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav also chipped in with quick runs as the Men in Blue set Sri Lanka a daunting target of 203.

Sri Lanka Fight Back Through Nissanka

Chasing 203, Sri Lanka got off to a disastrous start when Kusal Mendis fell for a golden duck, dismissed by Hardik Pandya. However, opener Pathum Nissanka and wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Perera turned the tide with a brilliant 127-run stand for the second wicket.

Perera scored a fiery 58 off 32 balls before falling to Varun Chakravarthy, while skipper Charith Asalanka (5) and Kamindu Mendis (3) failed to contribute. But Nissanka stood tall at the other end, notching up a spectacular 107 off 58 balls, including 7 fours and 6 sixes. His maiden ton of the Asia Cup kept Sri Lanka in the hunt until he too departed in the final overs.

Sri Lanka finished on 202 for 5, levelling the scores and forcing the contest into a Super Over.

Arshdeep Singh Holds Nerve in Super Over

Sri Lanka batted first in the Super Over but faltered against Arshdeep Singh’s nerves of steel. He dismissed Kusal Perera on the very first ball, before conceding just a single to Mendis on the second. A wide on the fourth ball gave Sri Lanka some hope, but Arshdeep struck again, removing Dasun Shanaka.

Sri Lanka ended with just 2 runs for 2 wickets in the Super Over, leaving India an easy chase of 3.

India Clinch Victory in Style

India wasted no time in wrapping up the contest. Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill needed just one delivery to seal the deal, scoring the required 3 runs on the first ball.

With the win, India advanced to the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2025, keeping their unbeaten record intact.

The contest will be remembered for Nissanka’s century, Abhishek Sharma’s explosive batting, and Arshdeep Singh’s calm brilliance under pressure, in what was one of the most thrilling matches of the tournament so far.
