Feasibility of Connecting Navi Mumbai Airport to Mumbai via Tunnel: Deputy CM Eknath Shinde Directs MMRDA to Examine Proposal
Mumbai, Oct 2025 : Can the Navi Mumbai Airport be connected to Mumbai through a tunnel? Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has today instructed the NMRDA to examine the feasibility of such a connection and submit a detailed report.
The meeting held today at the MSRDC office was attended by the Deputy CM’s Principal Secretary Naveen Sona, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, and other senior officials.
Navi Mumbai Airport is the second international airport for Mumbai and is set to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister. The airport will have an annual passenger capacity of two crore. Naturally, a large volume of vehicles will travel to and from the airport from Mumbai. The existing routes may become insufficient due to the anticipated increase in air traffic at the airport.
It is essential to ensure seamless connectivity of this airport with the national highway, suburban railway, metro, and water transport networks. In this context, the Deputy CM has asked the Municipal Commissioner to explore whether a tunnel from the existing Sea Link/BKC to Navi Mumbai Airport is feasible.
For this purpose, Deputy CM Shinde has also instructed that the project’s feasibility be studied, including how it could serve both land and maritime transport, and that experts be consulted for overall planning and design.
