Trump Vows Swift Resolution to Ukraine War, Highlights Talks with Russia and China

Washington, Nov 2025 : US President Donald Trump said he is confident he will “succeed in ending the conflict in Ukraine” within a few months, citing his experience in resolving international disputes. “I think we are going to get it done, yes. I think President Putin really wants to do business with the US,” Trump said in an interview with CBS News 60 Minutes, referring also to his past negotiations with China, India, and Pakistan.

Trump claimed that his previous dealings with world leaders were effective. “It did work with India, and it did work with Pakistan, and it did work with 60% of those countries,” he told CBS when asked if he could settle the conflict quickly. He added that Putin favors trade with the United States and “has made a lot of money for Russia,” calling their relationship “great.” Trump said his tariff policies helped ease other global conflicts and expressed confidence that they could work with Russia regarding Ukraine.

“I think he (Putin) wants to come in and trade with us, and he wants to make a lot of money for Russia. And I think that’s great,” Trump said.
He also suggested that his own approach to diplomacy differs from that of the current US administration. “It’s working with Putin, I think. I did differently with him because we do not treat him with foolishness. He is not somebody you can treat badly. I think he would like to be,” he stated.

Trump also praised both Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping as “smart, tough leaders” who should not be underestimated. “Both tough and smart. They’re very strong leaders. These are people not to be toyed with,” he said, adding that they are “very serious” and uninterested in superficial politics. “These are the tough, smart leaders,” Trump reiterated.

On nuclear weapons, Trump said that both Russia and China possess massive arsenals and stressed the need for denuclearization discussions. “We have more nuclear weapons than any other country. I think we should be talking about denuclearization,” he said. He added that while Russia has the capacity to “blow up the world 150 times,” China also possesses a substantial stockpile.

Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance said Washington continues working diplomatically with both Russia and Ukraine in pursuit of a resolution.

Trump’s confidence stems partly from earlier preparations for a planned US–Russia summit in Budapest, which was postponed indefinitely. Just days after announcing the meeting with Putin would occur “within two weeks or so,” the summit was canceled.

“I don’t want to have a wasted meeting,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday, adding that he would wait to see “what happens” next. Trump also confirmed that the US ongoing efforts include attempts to broker a ceasefire and secure hostage releases tied to the Gaza conflict.

When asked about his stance toward Russian aggression, Trump said he had instructed lead negotiator Steve Witkoff to make progress. “We have to get Russia done,” he stated. He also referenced the Biden administration’s plan to send missiles to Ukraine, emphasizing his opposition to escalating tensions.

In Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky’s first five-year term was set to end in May 2024. However, elections were suspended due to martial law imposed after Russia’s invasion in February 2022. Ukraine’s constitution prohibits holding elections under martial law.
