Tamil Nadu CM Inaugurates 25 “Anbu Sugal” Centres for Senior Citizens in Tiruchirappalli
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated 25 new “Anbu Sugal” centres aimed at enhancing the well-being and care of senior citizens. The launch event took place at the Sona College premises in Tiruchirappalli.
These centres have been established under the Department of Social Welfare and Women’s Rights. A total of 20 centres have been set up across 10 municipal corporations—two in each corporation—including Madurai, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruchirappalli, Salem, Tiruppur, Erode, Thoothukudi, Vellore, Thanjavur, and Dindigul.
In addition, five more centres have been opened across Chennai’s three zones—Thiruvottiyur, Sholinganallur, and Virugambakkam—and in the district municipalities of Ranipet and Krishnagiri.
Purpose of “Anbu Sugal” Centres
The centres aim to ensure the overall welfare of elderly citizens by providing:
- Physiotherapy services
- Yoga and rehabilitation facilities
- Indoor recreation and day-care activities
- Reading and leisure spaces
These centres are designed to keep senior citizens physically active, mentally engaged, and socially connected. They also serve as a support system for families, especially working couples who need safe day-time care for their elderly members.
Social Impact
The “Anbu Sugal” initiative reflects Tamil Nadu’s cultural tradition of honouring and caring for the elderly. The centres reduce the burden on families by offering structured day-care support and help strengthen family bonds. Women interested in working, especially those responsible for elderly care at home, will benefit greatly from these community centres.
Government’s Broader Support for Senior Citizens
Tamil Nadu has already implemented several welfare measures, including:
- Old-age homes
- Integrated care campuses
- Mobile medical units
- Pension schemes
All these initiatives aim to ensure dignity, safety, and essential support for senior citizens.
Event Highlights
During the inauguration, Chief Minister Stalin interacted with elderly participants, played traditional games with them, and distributed millet-based food products prepared by women’s self-help groups.
The event was attended by Ministers K.N. Nehru, S. Raghupathi, P. Geetha Jeevan, S.S. Sivasankar, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, Siva V. Meyyanathan, MPs Trichy Siva, A. Raja, Thanga Megavarshini, MLAs, district officials, and corporation representatives.
