Thane’s New District Government Hospital Will Be a Beacon of Hope for Future Generations: Health Minister Prakash Abitkar
Public Health Minister Visits Construction Site of the New Thane District Government Hospital
Thane, Nov 2025 : “A hospital is not just a building; it is the foundation of compassion and service to humanity,” said Maharashtra’s Minister for Public Health and Family Welfare, Prakash Abitkar, during his visit to the construction site of the new Thane District Government Hospital. He expressed confidence that this upcoming hospital will serve as a beacon of hope for future generations.
A Modern Healthcare Landmark for Thane
Minister Abitkar inspected various sections of the main hospital building — including the Outpatient Department (OPD), Accident and Emergency Unit, MRI and CT Scan departments, Sonography, X-Ray, Mammography, Inpatient Ward, Maternity Ward, Modular Operation Theatres, Helipad, Parking Structure, Nursing Training Center, and Residential Quarters for staff.
Covering a total area of 92,539 square meters, the project has achieved 87% completion, the minister noted with satisfaction. The hospital will have 900 beds, including:
- 500-bed General Hospital
- 200-bed Women and Child Hospital
- 200-bed Referral and Super-Specialty Hospital
Additionally, the complex will feature a helipad, nursing training center, residential quarters, parking facilities, and state-of-the-art ICUs.
Advanced Facilities and Specialized Services
The new hospital is designed to reduce maternal and infant mortality with advanced ICU, NICU, and SNCU units. It will also include TCU, ICU, NRC, mental health, hematology, and other critical care facilities.
The 200-bed Super-Specialty Wing will house departments such as:
- Cardiology with Cath Lab
- Neurology
- Oncology and Oncosurgery
- Nephrology and Dialysis Unit (including pediatric dialysis facilities)
High-end MRI, CT Scan, Chemotherapy, and Radiation Therapy services will also be available, bringing tertiary care within easy reach of Thane residents.
Education and Future Expansion
The government plans to start ANM/GNM and B.Sc. Nursing colleges within the hospital premises, with the long-term goal of establishing a Medical College. Once operational, Thane District Hospital will become Maharashtra’s largest government healthcare facility.
The hospital will cater not only to citizens within Thane district’s six municipal corporations, two municipal councils, and two nagar panchayats, but also to patients from rural and hilly areas like Tokawade, Murbad, and Shahapur, as well as neighboring districts such as Palghar and Raigad, and even up to the Gujarat border and the Kasara, Malshej, and Lonavala ghats.
Strategic Location and Emergency Readiness
Given Thane’s proximity to Mumbai city and suburbs, and its network of major highways — including the Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Mumbai-Agra, Mumbai-Ahmednagar, and Mumbai-Goa highways, along with the under-construction Virar-Alibag and Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi highways — the hospital will serve as a critical emergency hub.
Currently, accident victims from these routes often have to be referred to Mumbai for advanced treatment. Once completed, this new hospital will provide timely and modern healthcare locally, greatly reducing travel time and saving lives.
Minister Abitkar emphasized that the project represents the government’s strong commitment to upgrading public health services and ensuring that citizens have access to high-quality medical facilities close to home.
A Vision Backed by the State
Deputy Chief Minister and Thane’s Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde has described this Super-Specialty Hospital as a flagship healthcare project for the district. He has directed the Public Works Department (PWD), Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), the Health Department, and other agencies to expedite all pending works on a war footing.
He also instructed officials to clear any government-level pending proposals promptly to ensure smooth completion. Minister Abitkar assured full cooperation from his office to bring the project to fruition.

Among those who accompanied the minister were:
- Dr. A.M. Devmane, Special Officer
