Maharashtra Government to Take Over London’s Historic “India House” — Minister Ashish Shelar

Mumbai, Nov 2025 : The Maharashtra government will take over the historic “India House” in London — once home to Indian freedom fighters — and preserve it as a memorial. Cultural Affairs Minister Adv. Ashish Shelar announced this on Tuesday, noting that the iconic building had housed Veer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar during his stay in London.

Minister Shelar had visited London to bring back the historic sword of Raghuji Raje Bhosale of Nagpur, and during his visit, he paid a visit to India House. At that time, members of the Indian community in London drew his attention to the need to preserve this important heritage site.

Additionally, MLA Devyani Pharande from Nashik had also raised this demand. In this context, a joint review meeting was held with MLA Pharande and officials from the General Administration Department, Cultural Affairs Department, and Archaeology Department, among others.

It was decided that a committee will be constituted under the chairmanship of the “Mitra” organization, which will include representatives from the General Administration Department, Cultural Affairs Department, Archaeology Department, and Finance Department.

This committee will prepare a comprehensive report on the process of taking over India House and submit it to Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for approval. Based on the report’s recommendations, further action will be initiated by the state government.
