Saroj Podiyam Emerges as a Model of Self-Reliance After Rising from a Maoist-Affected Region
PM SVANidhi Scheme Becomes a Foundation of Economic Empowerment
Raipur, Nov 2025 : Saroj Podiyam, a resident of Sukma district, comes from a family affected by Maoist violence. In 2009, her family faced severe economic distress after Maoists killed her father-in-law. In this difficult situation, the government extended support with compassion—under the Nava Bihan scheme, she was provided housing, and her husband, Rakesh Podiyam, was appointed as a Nagar Sainik (Home Guard), giving the family both security and livelihood support.
Mrs. Saroj Podiyam had been doing sewing work from home, but due to a lack of capital, she was unable to expand her business. When she learned about the Prime Minister Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) Scheme, she applied to make use of the self-employment opportunity.
On 24 November, the State Bank of India, Sukma sanctioned her a loan of ₹15,000. The cheque was handed over by Chief Municipal Officer P.R. Korram and Chairman of Sukma Municipal Council, Hunga Ram Markam.
With the loan approved, Mrs. Podiyam expanded her sewing business with renewed enthusiasm and confidence. Today, with her hard work and the support of government schemes, she is providing for her family and has emerged as an empowered, self-reliant woman—setting an inspiring example for society.
Mrs. Saroj says that the assistance provided by the government, combined with her strong determination, brought positive change to her life.
Her story demonstrates that with proper guidance, access to government schemes, and personal resolve, one can overcome even the most difficult circumstances and move toward success.
