ECHOES OF Freedom
Written by Shalini Vohra.
On August 15 ,1947, India awoke to anew dawn of freedom after centuries of British rule. The air was filled with a sense of euphoria and anticipation as the tricolor was unfurled, symbolizing the birth of a independent, sovereign nation.
In a small village of Sonapur in West Bengal, nestled amidst lush green fields and bordered by a serene river, a young girl names Rupa watched the celebration with wide eyes. Rupa was a bright and inquisitive girl with big ,expressive brown eyes and a cascade of brown hair that framed her face . Her curiosity was boundless, and she loved asking questions and was always eager to learn about the world around her.
Her father, a freedom fighter , named Ganesh , had often narrated tales of the struggle for freedom.
As they walked along to the village square, Rupa asked, “Father, tell me again about Mahatma Gandhi and how he led the people.”
Ganesh smiles, his eyes reflecting pride and nostalgia. “Gandhi ji was a great leader. He taught us the power of non-violence and showed us that we could resist oppression without raising a single weapon.
At the village square , people gathered to sing patriotic songs, share sweets and exchange stories. The unfurled flag symbolizing freedom looked so beautiful as an important symbol of an independent India, as it represents the unity of the people in spite of the differences in language and culture.
Rupa whispered to her father, “Tell me about the Salt March again.”
Ganesh knelt down to her level. “The Salt March was the turning point. Gandhi ji walked 240 miles to the Arabian Sea to make salt , defying British monopoly . Thousands joined him , showing the British that we would not be silenced. “
As the sun set, the villagers gathered around a bonfire. Rupa rested her head against her father’s shoulder.
“Father, I want to do something for our country, just like you did. Her father’s eyes filled with joy and pride told her that she could help the nation by being a good and responsible citizen and helping others.
Years later, Rupa became a teacher, dedicated to educating others about the value of freedom and tolerance and the relentless pursuit for the truth.
One Independence day, as sha watched the hoisting of the national flag, she reminded her students as she told them” Remember, our freedom came at a great cost. It’s our duty to honor and cherish the sacrifices made to build a better future for everyone”.
Every independence day, Rupa’s village celebrate with the same fervor ,the stories of the freedom struggle and sacrifices are passed down from generation to generation with the spirit to help others and strive to make the community better as every small action counts and is valuable.
Our tricolor flag, fluttering proudly in the wind, serves as a symbol of hope, resilience and the enduring spirit of India. JAI HIND !
