Siddaramaiah–Shivakumar “Breakfast Diplomacy” Gains Momentum Amid Leadership Tensions in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Dec 2025 : Amid an intensifying leadership tussle within the Karnataka Congress, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the residence of Deputy Chief Minister and State Congress President D.K. Shivakumar on Tuesday, marking their second “breakfast diplomacy” meeting within a week. The meeting, held at Shivakumar’s private home in Bengaluru’s upscale Sadashivanagar, has renewed political conversations about power sharing, party unity, and the future of the state’s leadership.

Shivakumar, accompanied by his brother and former MP D.K. Suresh, warmly received Siddaramaiah, presenting him with a bouquet and a ceremonial shawl. Visuals from the scene showed the Deputy Chief Minister smiling and greeting the media before the Chief Minister’s arrival, signalling an attempt to project harmony as rumours of internal rivalry continue to circulate.

Security around Shivakumar’s residence was tightened in anticipation of Siddaramaiah’s visit, with authorities erecting barricades and regulating traffic in the surrounding area. D.K. Suresh, when questioned about the political implications of the meeting, briefly told reporters that he “would not comment for now.”

Siddaramaiah left his official residence, ‘Cauvery’, earlier this morning to attend the meeting. The encounter comes at a time when the Congress faces pressure to neutralise reports of factionalism and demonstrate cohesion ahead of the Assembly’s winter session set to begin on December 8 in Belagavi.

A Meeting Laden With Political Significance

The breakfast meet—initiated by Shivakumar—has taken on considerable importance, given that the Deputy Chief Minister is widely seen as a strong contender for the top post. Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar have repeatedly insisted that they will abide by the Congress high command’s final decision on the leadership question. However, the political undertones surrounding their meetings have been impossible to ignore.

Adding flavour—literally and politically—to these engagements is the menu. Shivakumar had announced that “naati koli,” a traditional country chicken dish and one of Siddaramaiah’s favourites, would be served on Tuesday.
“I have invited the Hon’ble Chief Minister for breakfast to discuss and strengthen our collective efforts to deliver on our promises to Karnataka,” Shivakumar posted on X on Monday.
He emphasised that both leaders would “continue working together as a team” while sharing the special dish.

Siddaramaiah, responding to queries from reporters on Monday, said he had not yet received a formal call from Shivakumar but was ready to attend whenever invited.
“If I am invited for breakfast by Shivakumar, I will go. He told me he would invite me. But until now, I have not received any call,” Siddaramaiah had said.
However, he added that he was confident the invitation would come through—and it did later that evening.

Shivakumar, who has maintained that he and Siddaramaiah are “together” and committed to the instructions of the high command, reiterated that internal differences were largely a creation of media speculation.
“Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and I are working like brothers. We had the breakfast meeting because the media kept claiming that we have separate camps,” he said.
He also hinted that the Chief Minister would visit his residence again for dinner in the coming days.

A Show of Unity Ahead of the Winter Session

Congress sources say the leadership wants to send a strong message of solidarity as the winter session approaches, especially given the opposition’s plans to corner the government on various issues. The breakfast diplomacy is seen as an attempt to project stability within the ruling party at a crucial political moment.

The meetings also occur against the backdrop of Shivakumar’s long-standing ambition to occupy the Chief Minister’s chair—an aspiration that has created periodic friction within the Congress since the party returned to power in May 2023. While the Congress high command is yet to make any public statement on a leadership transition, both leaders have sought to maintain a cordial public image.

A Political Message Wrapped in Festive Greetings

Amid the political spotlight, Shivakumar also posted greetings on X to mark Hanuman Jayanti, describing Lord Hanuman as the bringer of courage, devotion, and the remover of obstacles.
“The embodiment of truth, courage, devotion, and service—I offer countless salutations to Lord Anjaneya. May the grace of Maruti Raya be upon everyone,” he wrote.
The message, though religious, carried a subtle political undertone, coming at a moment when he is navigating complex internal equations.

As the winter session nears, all eyes remain on the evolving dynamics between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. Whether the breakfast diplomacy leads to genuine unity or merely masks deeper tensions remains to be seen.
