Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati Holds Consultative Meeting on Power Generation with Power Minister, P&E Engineers, NEEPCO, and Vendors
Aizawl : Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati convened a consultative meeting with the state’s Power & Electricity Minister, Pu F. Rodingliana, senior engineers from the Power & Electricity Department, representatives from NEEPCO, and private vendors contracted for solar electricity connections in the state.
During the meeting, PowerPoint presentations were made by the Power & Electricity Department of Mizoram, NEEPCO, and the vendors. Following the presentations, there was an extensive discussion on enhancing power generation within the state to meet its requirements and potentially create a surplus for sale.
Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati expressed his concern that, despite Mizoram’s significant potential in hydroelectric power generation, the state has long struggled with power shortages. He noted that the state has been unable to generate even the small amount of power needed during peak hours, leading to the costly practice of purchasing power from outside the state. Acknowledging the state’s limited financial resources, which hinder the establishment of large hydro plants, he strongly suggested that Mizoram should work to attract large Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) capable of setting up such plants without requiring state funding. He also advised the state’s Power & Electricity Department to raise awareness about schemes like the PM Surya Ghar Yojana to increase enrollment in on-grid rooftop solar connections. The Governor emphasized the importance of achieving self-sufficiency in power generation for Mizoram, highlighting its significance for the state’s development and India’s broader goal of becoming a developed nation.
On behalf of the state’s Power & Electricity Department, Minister of State Pu F. Rodingliana provided an overview of the major initiatives undertaken during the current financial year. He also outlined the new government’s strategies to push for self-sufficiency in the power sector, including major ongoing projects such as the construction of towers, lines, and substations. Additionally, he discussed modernization and renovation efforts, including the replacement of old and overloaded transformers and the introduction of new billing software, smart meters, and other technological upgrades.
