Suresh Kalmadi, Veteran Congress Leader and Former IOA President, Passes Away at 81
New Delhi, Jan 2026 : Veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister Suresh Kalmadi passed away on Tuesday in Pune after a prolonged illness. He was 81. Known for his extensive contributions to Indian sports and politics, Kalmadi leaves behind his wife, a son and daughter-in-law, two daughters with their spouses, and grandchildren.
A prominent figure in Indian sports administration, Kalmadi served as the president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for over a decade and played a pivotal role in shaping India’s sports governance. Alongside his administrative contributions, he had a long-standing political career, representing Pune multiple times in Parliament and holding several key ministerial and parliamentary positions.
Suresh Kalmadi was born on May 1, 1944, in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu, into a family with roots in Mangalore, Karnataka, reflecting their Konkani heritage. He completed his early schooling at St. Vincent’s High School in Pune and pursued higher education at Fergusson College, Pune. This academic foundation eventually led him to the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla, followed by specialised aviation training at the Air Force Flying College in Jodhpur and Allahabad.
Kalmadi entered electoral politics in 1982, backed by the Congress (S) faction led by Sharad Pawar, and was elected to the Rajya Sabha as an Independent member representing Maharashtra. During this period, he also served as the president of the Indian Youth Congress (Socialist) from 1981 to 1986. Following the merger of Congress(S) with the Indian National Congress in 1986, Kalmadi became an integral member of the INC, marking the beginning of a long-term association with the party.
He represented Maharashtra in multiple parliamentary terms, serving four Rajya Sabha terms between 1982 and 2004, followed by three terms in the Lok Sabha from Pune in 1996, 2004, and 2009. His tenure as Union Minister of State for Railways further underscored his influence in national politics.
In 1996, Kalmadi was elected president of the IOA, a position he held for multiple terms until 2011. Under his leadership, the IOA coordinated India’s participation in the Olympic Games and oversaw national sports federations. He was re-elected in 2008 for his fourth consecutive term but stepped down in 2012 under pressure from the International Olympic Committee.
Kalmadi’s career was also marked by controversy. On April 25, 2011, he was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with alleged corruption and criminal conspiracy related to the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The case centered on irregularities in awarding a Rs 107 crore Timing, Scoring, and Results (TSR) contract to a Swiss firm without competitive bidding. He denied wrongdoing, claiming the allegations were politically motivated. Despite the legal battles, he remained active in athletics administration and received the Asian Athletics Association (AAA) President’s Award in 2015 for his 13-year contribution to Asian athletics.
Suresh Kalmadi’s legacy encompasses a blend of political service and sports administration. While his career witnessed highs and lows, his influence on Indian sports, particularly through the IOA and international athletics, remains significant. His passing marks the end of an era in Indian sports and political leadership.
