France Signals Readiness to Deploy Thousands of Troops to Support Ukraine Peace After Ceasefire
Jan 2026 : French President Emmanuel Macron has said that “several thousand” French troops could be deployed to help maintain peace in Ukraine following the signing of a ceasefire agreement, underscoring Europe’s growing role in shaping post-war security arrangements. Speaking in an interview with French television channel France 2, Macron made the remarks during a high-level meeting of Western and European leaders held in Paris.
Macron clarified that France is prepared to participate in an international operation aimed at monitoring the Russian-Ukrainian border once a ceasefire comes into force. However, he emphasized that French forces would not take on combat roles. Instead, their mission would focus on supporting stability and assisting in the regeneration and restructuring of the Ukrainian armed forces.
“France will participate in an operation after the ceasefire is signed,” Macron said, adding that extensive preparatory work has already been carried out in coordination with Ukraine, the Coalition of the Willing, and the United States. According to him, these partners would be responsible for determining whether the ceasefire or border arrangements are violated and for responding accordingly.
The comments followed a meeting in Paris attended by representatives from around 30 Western and European countries, where participants agreed that any future peace agreement with Russia must include robust and credible security guarantees for Ukraine. A joint declaration issued after the meeting stated that the coalition stands ready to establish a system of political and legal guarantees once a ceasefire is implemented. These measures would include participation in a US-led ceasefire monitoring mechanism, continued military assistance to Ukraine, and long-term defense and security cooperation.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also confirmed a significant development, announcing that the United Kingdom and France have signed a declaration of intent to deploy troops to Ukraine if a peace deal is reached with Russia. Speaking after talks with Ukraine’s international partners, Starmer said the two countries plan to establish military coordination centers across Ukraine to deter any future Russian aggression.
Macron later reiterated that such a deployment could involve several thousand troops, reflecting the scale of Europe’s commitment to ensuring Ukraine’s security after the conflict.
Ukraine’s allies broadly supported the proposal for strong security guarantees and indicated that the United States would play a leading role in overseeing any ceasefire arrangement. However, key issues, particularly those related to territorial control, remain unresolved.
Russia has consistently warned that the presence of foreign troops in Ukraine would be viewed as a legitimate military target. Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, and Moscow currently controls around 20 percent of Ukrainian territory, highlighting the complexity and sensitivity surrounding any post-war security deployment.
