‘New Chandrapur’ Will Enhance the District’s Glory – Guardian Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar
Chandrapur : To accommodate the rapid development and growing population of Chandrapur district, the planned ‘New Chandrapur’ along the Irai River is set to alleviate pressure on existing infrastructure and elevate the district’s status. State Forest Minister and Guardian Minister of Chandrapur, Sudhir Mungantiwar, emphasized that the initiative taken by MHADA to establish a modern sports complex in Chandrapur, modeled after Pune’s Balewadi Stadium, marks the beginning of a bright future.
Following MHADA’s designation as the special planning authority for the New Chandrapur project, Minister Mungantiwar led a one-day meeting with developers, industry leaders, and institutional managers on Tuesday at Vanamati Auditorium in Nagpur. MHADA Vice President and Chief Executive Officer Sanjay Jaiswal, Chandrapur Collector Vinay Gowda G.C., and senior MHADA officers were present.
Minister Mungantiwar highlighted that Chandrapur, with its diverse and unique institutions like the Forest Academy, Military School, Botanical Garden, Cancer Hospital, and SNDT College, is becoming a global attraction. Given the limitations on city expansion due to the surrounding forest areas and urbanization pressures, it was decided to plan for 10,000 affordable homes in collaboration with Mahapreet. Additionally, a recent meeting discussed the construction of 3,600 homes, and a state-of-the-art stadium on 100 acres, akin to Pune’s Balewadi Stadium, was confirmed. Mungantiwar expressed confidence that the “Investor Summit” will accelerate the New Chandrapur project’s progress.
Concept of New Chandrapur:
Since the 1990s, the lack of space around Chandrapur city due to surrounding forests has strained local infrastructure. In 1998, plans for New Chandrapur were handed to MHADA, and 139.71 hectares were reserved for development. A budget of ₹713 crore was sanctioned for facilities such as schools, hospitals, colleges, playgrounds, and residential and non-residential complexes. Although progress stalled for some time, Minister Mungantiwar’s persistent efforts have led to MHADA appointing a consultant and accelerating the project.
At a meeting in Nagpur on Tuesday, MHADA Vice Chairman Sanjiv Jaiswal engaged with investors regarding the New Chandrapur project. Guardian Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar, local dignitaries, representatives, and citizens attended the meeting, where discussions focused on developing roads, electricity, water, and other infrastructure based on the needs of the residents.
