US Weighs “Very Strong Options” as Trump Warns Iran Amid Reports of Civilian Deaths
Washington, Jan 2026 : US President Donald Trump on Sunday said the United States is considering “very strong options” in response to unfolding developments in Iran, following reports that civilians may have been killed during recent unrest, triggering heightened scrutiny by the American military and security establishment.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while returning from Florida to the White House, Trump expressed concern over the situation inside Iran, suggesting that innocent lives may have been lost. “They’re starting to, it looks like, and there seem to be some people killed that aren’t supposed to be killed,” he said. He also launched a sharp attack on Iran’s leadership, describing them as rulers who govern through force. “These are violent, if you call ’em leaders. I don’t know if they’re leaders or just they rule through violence,” he remarked.
Trump said the US military is closely tracking developments and reviewing potential responses. “We’re looking at it very seriously. The military’s looking at it, and we’re looking at some very strong options. We’ll make a determination,” he stated, without elaborating on the nature of the measures under consideration.
When pressed on whether Iran had crossed a red line or whether military action was imminent, the President declined to outline any operational details. Pushing back against the line of questioning, he said, “Am I gonna really — are you asking me to say, what will they do? Where will we attack? When and at what angle will we attack from?” His remarks underscored a deliberate effort to maintain strategic ambiguity.
Trump added that he is receiving constant updates on the situation inside Iran. “I’m getting an hourly report, and we’re gonna make a determination,” he said, signalling that decisions would be based on evolving ground realities.
Addressing reports that protesters had been killed, Trump acknowledged multiple causes behind the casualties. “Some of the protesters were killed through the stampeding. I mean, you know, there’s so many of ’em, and some were shot,” he said, suggesting that both crowd-related incidents and security action may have contributed to the deaths.
The President also issued a stern warning when asked about the possibility of retaliation by Iran or its regional allies. “If they do that, we will hit them at levels that they’ve never been hit before,” Trump warned. “They won’t even believe it.” He stressed that Tehran should already be aware of Washington’s resolve based on past actions.
Referring to previous US operations, Trump said Iran had reason to take American warnings seriously. “Don’t you think they take your threats seriously?” he said in response to a reporter’s question. “After going through it for years with me being hit, Soleimani, al-Baghdadi, the Iran nuclear threat wiped out.”
Trump did not clarify whether the US has consulted its allies regarding a coordinated response, nor did he offer a timeline for any final decision. His comments come amid sustained unrest in Iran, where repeated waves of protests have erupted in recent weeks. Thousands of Iranians have taken to the streets across multiple cities, voicing opposition to the current regime, amid reports of crackdowns by security forces.
The situation continues to evolve, with Washington keeping a close watch on developments as tensions between the two countries once again show signs of escalation.
