Government to Develop Raipur as a Metro City: Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai

Raipur, Jan 2026: The state government is committed to developing Raipur on the lines of a metro city, ensuring modern and robust arrangements for roads, drinking water, electricity, healthcare, sanitation and civic amenities. Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai stated that there would be no shortage of funds for the development of Raipur city, and that the government would work in accordance with the public mandate and aspirations. He made these remarks while addressing a high-level review meeting on the comprehensive development of Raipur city and its surrounding areas at Mahanadi Bhavan in the Secretariat on Tuesday.

The Chief Minister said that urban local bodies have been provided with two-and-a-half times more resources than earlier for infrastructure development, enabling quality and time-bound execution of development works in the capital region.

Highlighting the challenges posed by rapid urbanisation, Shri Sai noted that Raipur is facing increasing pressure on traffic, housing, water supply and public services. Keeping this in view, he emphasised the need for well-planned and practical strategies at both short-term and long-term levels so that the city’s requirements can be effectively met for decades to come.

The Chief Minister made it clear that the overall development of Raipur is possible only when the Municipal Corporation, Railways and the Public Works Department work in close coordination and in a planned manner. He directed officials to prioritise ground-level issues and needs highlighted by local public representatives while preparing action plans.

During the meeting, detailed discussions were held on several key issues, including the condition of the city’s drainage system, encroachments at major intersections, resale of vacant shops in commercial complexes constructed by the Municipal Corporation, strengthening of health infrastructure, and upgradation of facilities at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital (Mekahara) and its associated medical college.

The review also covered steps to improve the sanitation system, drinking water supply, water treatment plants, sewerage networks, protection of playgrounds, and the progress of slum redevelopment schemes, with the aim of bringing tangible improvements in the quality of urban life.

Keeping future needs in mind, the Chief Minister issued directions regarding proposed projects such as underground electric lines, new road corridors, flyovers, and the construction of public buildings and stadiums. He instructed all concerned departments to submit the required proposals at the earliest to the Chief Secretary’s office and ensure that works related to basic infrastructure are completed within the stipulated timelines.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Shri Arun Sao, Forest Minister Shri Kedar Kashyap, Finance Minister Shri O.P. Choudhary, Skill Development Minister Shri Khushwant Saheb, Member of Parliament Shri Brijmohan Agrawal, Raipur South MLA Shri Sunil Soni, along with Shri Purandar Mishra, Shri Rajesh Moonat, Shri Motilal Sahu, Shri Anuj Sharma, Shri Indra Kumar Sahu, Raipur Mayor Smt.
