City Walls Come Alive on the Occasion of the Pune Grand Tour
A Sporting and Cultural Legacy Painted on the Walls
Pune, Jan 2026 : Against the backdrop of the historic cycling competition ‘Bajaj Pune Grand Tour 2026’ being held in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, the walls of both cities have quite literally begun to “speak.” To enhance the city’s beauty and to generate enthusiasm for sports among citizens, the municipal corporations have created attractive wall murals at various locations. As a result, roads are no longer just routes for traffic but have begun to resemble open art galleries.

Showcasing World-Class Sportspersons
These murals celebrate not only cycling but also legendary players and emerging stars from various sports. Among them, the portrait of Italy’s Elisa Balsamo, the 2020 Road World Champion, has caught the attention of sports enthusiasts. The mural of Arvind Pawar, the first Indian road cyclist to participate in the World Championships, serves as an inspiration for today’s youth.
The portrait of Harshita Jakhar, who won a gold medal at the 2025 Track Asia Cup, conveys a powerful message of “women power.” The struggle and journey of ultra-cyclist Kabir, who has brought recognition to the country in the field of cycling, have also been depicted on the walls.

A Beautiful Confluence of Sports and Culture
Along with sportspersons, these walls also showcase Maharashtra’s glorious tradition and culture. On one side, there are murals depicting the ‘Wari’ pilgrimage and men and women in traditional attire, while on the other side, images of women playing basketball, weightlifting, yoga, and tennis have been created under the concept of ‘Women of Pune.’ These murals, carrying the message “India’s First Global Cycling Competition,” are ready to place Pune firmly on the global sports map.

Administrative Initiative and Public Response
Under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Shravan Hardikar, this city beautification project has been implemented through the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations. Citizens are expressing satisfaction on witnessing this beautiful blend of colour, art, and culture on otherwise lifeless cement walls. The initiative has created an encouraging atmosphere for citizens who cycle and exercise regularly.

“Seeing our sportspersons and our culture on the city walls fills us with pride. This has not only transformed the city’s appearance but has also increased awareness about sports,” said a local resident. The artistic expression created on the occasion of the ‘Bajaj Pune Grand Tour’ has become a special treat for Punekars, and through this art, a suitable atmosphere has been created in Pimpri-Chinchwad for a grand sporting festival.
