Guwahati, Aug 2026 : Assam’s flood situation remained grim on Friday, with more than 1.55 lakh people affected by the latest wave of flooding across 13 districts, while the cumulative death toll from floods in the state this year has climbed to 98, officials said.
According to the latest Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report, a total of 1,55,849 people are currently affected across 464 villages and 33 revenue circles in the affected districts.
Golaghat has reported the highest number of affected people at 58,750, followed by Sivasagar with 48,286. Jorhat has 25,259 affected residents, while Charaideo reported 12,779. Nagaon has recorded 5,424 affected people, followed by Darrang with 3,367 and Dhemaji with 1,265.
The continuing floods have also caused extensive damage to agricultural land. According to ASDMA, crop fields covering 10,748.64 hectares remain submerged across the state, raising concerns over agricultural losses and the impact on rural livelihoods.
Authorities have opened 73 relief camps and relief distribution centres in the affected areas to provide shelter, food and essential assistance to displaced residents. ASDMA said 10,326 people are currently staying in relief camps, while another 6,881 people are receiving assistance through relief distribution centres.
The flood situation has also led to concerns over rising water levels in several rivers. The Dhansiri (South) river at Golaghat and Numaligarh, as well as the Kushiyara river in Sribhumi district, continued to flow above the danger level on Friday morning.
However, officials said no river in the state was flowing above its highest flood level, providing some relief amid the continuing crisis.
The floods have affected livestock as well, with 47,879 animals reported to have been impacted. Residential infrastructure has also suffered damage, with 126 houses completely destroyed and another 344 partially damaged in the affected districts.
Rescue and relief operations are continuing with the involvement of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Civil Defence personnel and other agencies. Authorities have deployed 219 rescue teams and eight boats to assist people stranded or displaced by the floodwaters.
Multiple medical teams are also operating in affected areas to provide healthcare support and respond to emergencies. Relief supplies, including food grains, drinking water, baby food and other essential items, are being distributed among affected communities.
Officials said the situation is being closely monitored, particularly in areas located along rivers where water levels continue to fluctuate.
Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable and low-lying areas to remain alert and follow instructions issued by local administrations and disaster management agencies.
With large areas still inundated and thousands of people dependent on relief assistance, officials are maintaining close surveillance of river levels and weather conditions while continuing rescue, relief and rehabilitation measures across the affected districts.
