Bengaluru, Sep 2026 : Bengaluru-based deep-tech aviation startup Alteon has achieved a major milestone in autonomous flight after successfully flying an aircraft at less than one metre above the ocean surface, demonstrating dynamic soaring manoeuvres that could eventually enable unmanned aircraft to remain airborne for months or even more than a year.
The startup has also raised ₹24 crore in pre-seed funding to accelerate the development of ultra-long-endurance autonomous aircraft aimed primarily at maritime surveillance and defence applications. The latest offshore test was conducted over the Bay of Bengal, where Alteon’s aircraft autonomously completed multiple consecutive loops while flying at extremely low altitude.
The demonstration focused on dynamic soaring, a flight technique inspired by albatrosses and other seabirds that exploit differences in wind speed at varying altitudes. By repeatedly moving between slower-moving air close to the ocean surface and faster-moving air above, an aircraft can extract energy from wind gradients and maintain flight with minimal or no conventional propulsion.
Alteon believes mastering the technique could pave the way for aircraft capable of remaining airborne for more than a year without traditional refuelling. The company’s immediate objective is to achieve what it describes as “energy-neutral dynamic soaring”, under which propulsion would be switched off and the aircraft would sustain itself entirely through energy harvested from atmospheric wind.
Achieving such endurance, however, requires solving several interconnected engineering challenges. The company says its approach involves optimising aerodynamics, autonomous flight systems, structural efficiency and reliability simultaneously. Each prototype and flight test is intended to generate additional data that can be used to improve subsequent aircraft designs and bring the concept closer to continuous, long-duration operation.
Founded in 2025 by Samay Sanghvi, Alteon grew out of experiments with radio-controlled aircraft that began in 2023. Although Sanghvi does not have a formal engineering degree, he has built a team of around 20 specialists focused on developing autonomous aviation technologies. The startup has attracted backing from investors including Lachy Groom, Together Fund, Emergent Ventures and 1517.
The company’s long-term vision is to deploy fleets of autonomous aircraft capable of providing persistent monitoring across large maritime areas. Such aircraft could potentially be used to detect illegal fishing, track trafficking activities, monitor offshore and other critical infrastructure, observe weather systems and support defence and security operations.
Compared with conventional surveillance platforms, Alteon believes ultra-long-endurance aircraft could significantly reduce the cost of maintaining a persistent presence over oceans. Ships require substantial operating and crew costs, while satellites involve expensive launch and infrastructure requirements. Conventional aircraft, meanwhile, are constrained by fuel endurance and the need for regular take-offs and landings.
The aircraft currently under development has a wingspan of approximately three metres and is designed to operate close to the ocean surface at speeds exceeding 100 kilometres per hour. Future versions could incorporate systems in which propellers operate as turbines, allowing the aircraft to convert some of the energy harvested from wind into electricity and recharge onboard batteries.
The company’s ambitions would represent a significant increase over existing endurance records. The longest continuous flight cited by Alteon was 67 days, achieved by Airbus subsidiary AALTO’s Zephyr in 2025. Alteon is targeting an endurance period more than five times longer, potentially extending autonomous operation beyond a year.
The ₹24 crore funding will support further research and development, improvements in autonomous navigation and control systems, aerodynamic refinement and preparation for eventual deployment of aircraft fleets over maritime zones.
The technology is being developed at a time when India’s unmanned aerial vehicle sector is expanding rapidly. The domestic UAV market, estimated at around ₹3,900 crore in 2025, is projected to approach ₹11,500 crore by 2030, driven by increasing demand from defence, surveillance, logistics and infrastructure monitoring.
If Alteon succeeds in achieving energy-neutral dynamic soaring, the technology could open up a new category of persistent autonomous aviation. Fleets of such aircraft could continuously monitor maritime boundaries, support scientific research, assist disaster-response operations and strengthen defence surveillance while reducing dependence on expensive conventional platforms.
For India, the development also highlights the growing role of deep-tech startups in addressing complex aerospace challenges that traditionally required large industrial programmes. Alteon’s low-altitude Bay of Bengal demonstration is an early but significant step towards its broader goal of creating autonomous aircraft capable of staying in the sky for unprecedented periods.
