Lucknow, Aug 2026 : The BJP on Tuesday appointed national general secretary Vinod Tawde as the party’s in-charge for Uttar Pradesh, intensifying its organisational preparations for the politically crucial 2027 Assembly elections.
Alongside Tawde, Jagdish Ishwarbhai Patel has been appointed as the party’s co-in-charge for the state. The appointments are part of the BJP’s broader strategy to strengthen its organisational machinery, sharpen its electoral strategy and consolidate its social and caste equations ahead of the polls.
Uttar Pradesh, which sends the highest number of MPs to the Lok Sabha, remains central to the BJP’s national political strategy. With the 2027 Assembly elections approaching, the party is focusing on strengthening its grassroots network and broadening its appeal among different social groups.
As part of this effort, the BJP has also been increasing the representation of non-Yadav Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and minority leaders from Uttar Pradesh in its national organisational structure. The move is seen as an attempt to widen the party’s support base and strengthen its connect with diverse communities in the state.
Tawde’s appointment assumes significance given his extensive experience in organisational management, election strategy and alliance coordination. He has handled several important assignments for both the BJP and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), including responsibilities involving presidential and vice-presidential elections.
In 2022, Tawde served as the election in-charge for NDA presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu. He coordinated with NDA partners across states and worked to mobilise support for her candidature, which ultimately secured a decisive victory.
He was subsequently entrusted with coordinating the NDA’s campaign for C.P. Radhakrishnan in the 2025 Vice-Presidential election. In that role, he worked closely with alliance partners and supporting parties to coordinate the electoral campaign.
Tawde has also held significant organisational responsibilities in state units. He was appointed BJP in-charge of Haryana in 2020, where he worked to strengthen the party’s organisational structure and electoral preparedness.
His political and organisational profile grew further after he was given charge of Bihar in 2022. Tawde subsequently emerged as one of the BJP’s key strategists in the state. The party credited his organisational role during the political developments of 2023 that resulted in the replacement of the RJD-JD(U) government with an NDA administration.
Under his organisational stewardship, the NDA delivered a strong performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Bihar and later secured a major victory in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.
His experience in managing complex political equations and coordinating with allies is expected to be particularly relevant in Uttar Pradesh, where caste combinations, regional dynamics and alliance politics play a crucial role in determining electoral outcomes.
With the 2027 Assembly elections drawing closer, Tawde’s appointment places him at the forefront of the BJP’s efforts to strengthen its organisational network, expand its social coalition and consolidate its electoral position in Uttar Pradesh. The party is expected to intensify its grassroots outreach and booth-level preparations in the coming months.
