New Delhi, August 2026 : Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta on Thursday handed over appointment letters to newly appointed teachers at a programme held at Bharat Mandapam. A total of 1,368 teachers received appointment letters in this phase, including 1,015 TGTs, 236 PGTs and 117 music teachers. Congratulating and extending her best wishes to all the newly appointed teachers, the Chief Minister said the occasion was not merely about handing over appointment letters, but about further strengthening the responsibility of ensuring better education for lakhs of children and their families in Delhi. Delhi is a city of dreams for people who have come from different parts of the country, and every child studying in a Delhi government school is a child of Delhi, she said. Ensuring better education, health and a bright future for every such child remains the government’s foremost commitment.
Delhi Education Minister Shri Ashish Sood, senior officials of the Directorate of Education and other dignitaries were present on the occasion. CM Rekha Gupta said the addition of new teachers would mean better academic support, guidance and new opportunities for thousands of students studying in Delhi government schools. The recruitment drive is an important step towards filling vacant posts in government schools and strengthening teaching capacity.
Sharing an experience from one of her school visits, the Chief Minister said that during direct interactions with students, she learnt that several schools did not have teachers for subjects such as science and music. At times, a limited number of teachers had to handle several classes. The experience highlighted the seriousness of the challenges related to teacher availability, following which work was undertaken with the Education Department to address these issues.
CM Rekha Gupta said the government’s objective was not only to build school infrastructure but also to ensure that every classroom had qualified and dedicated teachers, the quality of teaching improved, modern technology was used effectively, and children had adequate opportunities in sports and the arts. Every child should truly be able to learn and move ahead, she said. She said Delhi’s education system was being taken beyond an examination-centric approach and linked with the overall development of children. The Chief Minister urged the newly appointed teachers to become not just subject experts for their students, but also mentors, role models and guides.
Education Minister Shri Ashish Sood said the addition of 1,368 new teachers to Delhi’s education family was not merely an increase in the number of appointments, but an important step towards strengthening the future of thousands of students. “Our goal is clear: wherever a teacher is needed, a teacher should be available; wherever a subject expert is required, there should be a specialist teacher; and every child in Delhi should have an equal opportunity to receive quality education,” Sood said.
He said a teacher’s role was not limited to completing the curriculum. A teacher gives a student confidence, direction and the belief to move forward, along with knowledge. A child sitting in a classroom today could go on to become a scientist, doctor, engineer, officer, entrepreneur or take on an important responsibility for the nation in the future. Therefore, the responsibility of a teacher was, in essence, a responsibility towards nation-building, he said.
Sood said the Delhi government had accelerated a comprehensive recruitment drive to address teacher vacancies instead of treating them as a normal situation. After around 751 candidates were appointed in April and May 2026, 1,368 more teachers are now being brought into the education system. He said the government would continue to focus equally on teacher recruitment, training and capacity building so that teachers became better equipped to meet the demands of changing times, new technology and the 21st century. “Our resolve is to develop Delhi government schools into institutions where modern infrastructure, smart classrooms and technology are complemented by inspiring and dedicated teachers,” he said.
A major step towards strengthening quality education
The appointment programme is part of the Delhi government’s broader recruitment drive to fill vacant teaching posts in government schools and further strengthen the teaching system. Appointments have been made across various teaching categories over the past three months as part of the recruitment process. Around 751 candidates had already been appointed in April-May 2026, while 1,368 teachers are being handed appointment letters in the current phase. These include 1,015 TGTs, 236 PGTs and 117 music teachers. The recruitment drive will help address the shortage of teachers in government schools, increase the availability of subject-specialist teachers, and provide students with better academic support and quality education.
