New Delhi, Oct 2026 : Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke on Sunday said he was returning to his hometown in Maharashtra to attend the last rites of his grandmother, who passed away on Saturday, hours after a Delhi court ordered his release from preventive detention. He also asserted that he and his colleagues would continue their campaign and would not be intimidated by the authorities.
In a post on X, Dipke said he was heading to his village to be with his family during the period of grief. He added that CJP co-conveners Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka would address a press conference in Delhi.
“The CJP will neither back down nor be intimidated. October 10 will go down as the beginning of the end of this dictatorship,” Dipke said in his post, reiterating the party’s determination to continue its protest.
The development came amid a controversy over whether Dipke had been informed about his grandmother’s death while he was in police custody. His mother had alleged that he was not informed of the bereavement during his detention.
The Delhi Police rejected the allegation, maintaining that the information had been conveyed to him promptly and sensitively.
“The information regarding the demise of Abhijeet’s grandmother was promptly conveyed to him with due sensitivity. He was also informed of the scheduled funeral time and offered all possible assistance to facilitate his travel to his hometown on humanitarian grounds, however he denied to avail the same,” the police said in a post on X.
Earlier on Sunday, a Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) court in Delhi ordered the release of Dipke, Das and Ranka, subject to conditions requiring them to maintain peace and good behaviour.
CJP legal affairs head Ratna Singh had confirmed that the three leaders were released after being placed under preventive arrest by the Delhi Police.
In its statement, the police said Dipke, Ranka and Das were detained on October 10 under Sections 126 and 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. It said all prescribed legal procedures had been followed and the three were produced before the SEM court at Delhi Cantonment on October 11.
According to the police, a surety bond of Rs 50,000 was furnished as a condition for maintaining peace and good behaviour for one year, following which the court ordered their release.
The three CJP leaders had been detained at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday after arriving in the national capital to participate in a planned demonstration against the Election Commission of India (ECI).
The proposed protest targeted Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The allegations relate to the revision exercise and have been raised by the party as part of its campaign.
Despite their release, Dipke’s statement indicated that the political confrontation surrounding the proposed demonstration would continue, with the party maintaining its opposition to the electoral roll revision process.
