During the nine days, devotees across the country observe prayers, religious rituals and other spiritual practices. Many also undertake fasting and visit temples to seek the blessings of the Goddess.
Sharadiya Navratri begins on the first day of the Hindu lunar month of Ashwin and is celebrated with particular devotion across several parts of India. The festival concludes with Vijayadashami, also known as Dussehra, which symbolises the victory of good over evil.
Maa Shailputri, whose name means “daughter of the mountain”, is worshipped on the first day of Navratri. Regarded as the first manifestation of Goddess Durga, she is associated with strength, devotion and well-being. Devotees seek her blessings for courage, stability and prosperity as they begin the nine-day festival.
