Port Louis, Aug 2026 : Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri met Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam and discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, the Indian High Commission said on Sunday.
During the meeting, the two leaders discussed opportunities to expand India-Mauritius energy cooperation, with Puri reaffirming New Delhi’s commitment to supporting Mauritius in strengthening its energy security and advancing its transition towards a more sustainable energy system.
“Hon’ble Minister called on Dr. the Hon. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Prime Minister of Mauritius. Both leaders discussed possibilities for furthering India-Mauritius cooperation in the energy sector,” the Indian High Commission said in a post on X.
Following the meeting, a Government-to-Government Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the oil and gas sector was exchanged. An agreement between Indian Oil Corporation Limited and the State Trading Corporation of Mauritius was also exchanged during the occasion.
According to the Indian mission, the agreements are aimed at meeting Mauritius’ requirements for petrol, diesel, marine gas oil and Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF). The arrangements are expected to provide Mauritius with greater certainty over long-term fuel supplies while helping reduce the impact of fluctuations in international prices.
The High Commission said the agreements would contribute to strengthening Mauritius’ overall energy security and provide greater stability in the availability of essential petroleum products.
Puri was on an official visit to Mauritius from August 20 to 22 as part of India’s efforts to deepen cooperation with the island nation across key sectors.
India and Mauritius share longstanding historical, cultural and economic ties, with energy cooperation emerging as an important component of their expanding strategic partnership.
The latest agreements come amid broader efforts by the two countries to strengthen bilateral relations. Last week, Mauritius President Dharambeer Gokhool joined Indian High Commissioner Anurag Srivastava at a reception hosted by the Indian High Commission to celebrate India’s 80th Independence Day.
The occasion highlighted the enduring friendship and close ties between the two countries.
High Commissioner Srivastava outlined several major developments in bilateral relations over the past year, including the Enhanced Strategic Partnership and the announcement of a Special Economic Package worth $680 million.
He also highlighted the inauguration of a Renal Transplant Unit and the handing over of 100 electric buses to Mauritius as important milestones in bilateral cooperation.
The High Commissioner further pointed to upcoming initiatives, including a joint satellite project and cooperation in developing an e-judiciary system.
The reception was attended by Prime Minister Ramgoolam, Deputy Prime Minister Marie Arianne Navarre-Marie, Vice-President Robert Hungley, Chief Justice Rehana Mungly-Gulbul, Speaker Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra, ministers, junior ministers and Members of Parliament.
Representatives of the business community, socio-cultural organisations, media and various sections of Mauritian society also participated in the event, reflecting the broad-based nature of India-Mauritius relations.
