CM Devendra Fadnavis directs completion and inauguration within three months
Centre to provide major benefits to dental patients across Vidarbha and Central India
Nagpur, September 2026 : Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed officials to expedite the remaining work of the Super-Specialty Dental Care and Research Centre on the Government Medical College campus in Nagpur and make it operational within the next three months.
The state-of-the-art centre, equipped with advanced technology and a range of specialised dental care facilities, is expected to benefit dental patients from Vidarbha as well as Central India and provide a new direction to dental education and research.
The Government Dental College and Hospital, Nagpur, functioning under the Directorate of Medical Education and Research, has been operational since 1968. A large number of dental patients from Vidarbha and Central India visit the institution for treatment. At least 500 patients avail themselves of healthcare services at the institution every day.
The new centre is being established with the objective of providing super-specialty dental services at this important institution.
State-of-the-art centre spread over 4,770 sq m
Around 22,002 sq ft of land has been acquired for the ambitious project, which has a total built-up area of approximately 4,770.12 sq m.
Funds have been sanctioned for the project, which is being developed with modern facilities, while technical approval has also been granted for construction quality and planning.
The foundation stone for the project was laid on January 4, 2019, by then Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
80 per cent work completed
Around 80 per cent of the building work has been completed, while the remaining work is in progress. Additional funds have been provided for electrical works, with administrative approval granted for the same on October 10, 2024.
The government has also approved new posts for the effective functioning of the centre, and the recruitment process for some posts is underway. Of the total 91 sanctioned posts, 60 have been filled.
Advanced medical equipment
Administrative approval has been granted for the purchase of medical equipment worth around Rs 3.89 crore under the District Planning Committee for providing advanced medical facilities at the centre.
In addition, around Rs 3.43 crore has been sanctioned under the state plan, and the process of procuring the equipment is underway.
Six new super-specialty dental departments
The Government Dental College, Nagpur, already has 63 undergraduate BDS seats and 24 postgraduate MDS seats, besides fellowship and PhD programmes. The institution has also received NAAC A+ accreditation.
With the new centre, modern and specialised dental treatment facilities will be made available under one roof. The centre will have six new departments — Digital Dentistry, Cosmetic Dentistry, Oral Implantology, Sports Dentistry, Craniofacial Surgery and Forensic Odontology.
Boost to dental care, education and research
The super-specialty centre will provide advanced treatment for complex dental conditions while also helping undergraduate and postgraduate students receive training in modern dental technologies.
The facility is expected to simultaneously strengthen patient care, dental education and research.
New identity for Maharashtra’s dental sector
Maharashtra currently has four government dental colleges, one Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation-run Nair Dental College and more than 30 private dental colleges. The state is among the leading states in the country in terms of the number of government-run dental colleges.
Once the Super-Specialty Dental Care and Research Centre in Nagpur becomes operational with advanced technology, it is expected to further strengthen Maharashtra’s position in dental research and patient care.
In accordance with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ directions, plans have been made to expedite the remaining work and make the centre operational within the stipulated timeframe. The facility will provide an important hub for advanced super-specialty dental treatment not only for patients from Vidarbha but also for those from across Central India.
