ISRO Successfully Tests Upgraded SSLV Booster Stage, Boosting Payload Capacity

New Delhi, August 2026: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully completed a ground static test of an upgraded version of the Solid Booster Stage (SS1) of the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV), marking an important step towards improving the launcher’s performance and production efficiency.

The static test was conducted on August 11, 2026, at the Static Test Facility of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The upgraded SS1 stage incorporates several design improvements, including an enhanced propellant burn rate in two motor segments, an optimised thermal protection system and process improvements in the nozzle subsystem aimed at simplifying production and reducing overall weight.

During the test, the performance of the solid motor was closely monitored through extensive instrumentation. More than 600 parameters covering ignition, ballistics, structural behaviour, thermal performance, dynamics and acoustic characteristics were recorded. Analysis of the test data indicated that the motor performed close to its predicted parameters.

The successful static firing is expected to validate the design modifications introduced in the SS1 stage and pave the way for its integration into future SSLV missions. According to the information provided, the upgraded version could increase the SSLV’s payload carrying capability to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) by approximately 100 kg.

The SSLV has been developed by ISRO as a compact launcher designed to support quick turnaround and on-demand launches of small satellites. The vehicle is intended to offer a flexible and cost-effective launch option for customers seeking to place small satellites into orbit.

The SSLV programme has already completed two successful development flights, demonstrating the vehicle’s growing operational maturity. With the upgraded SS1 stage, ISRO is now seeking to further enhance the launcher’s payload performance while also making its manufacturing process more efficient.

The development also assumes significance for India’s growing commercial space sector. Technology transfer of the SSLV to Indian industry is already underway, with the objective of enabling large-scale production of the launcher.

Once industrial production is established, the SSLV is expected to play a significant role in providing dedicated launch services for small satellites, both for Indian and international customers. The upgraded booster stage could therefore contribute not only to improved technical performance but also to faster production and greater launch availability.

The latest static test represents another step in ISRO’s efforts to strengthen India’s capabilities in the rapidly expanding small-satellite launch market, while increasing the role of domestic industry in the production and commercialisation of launch vehicles.
